GOING INDONESIAN FOR DINNER

11th JULY 2022 ~ It was a last minute plan but Mr. Muhammad Arif Mohd. Nizam agreed to meet up for dinner once he finished work. This time he suggested we met at this Indonesian restaurant called "Restoran Ayam Sambal Pletos" in Taman Daya.

Ayam Sambal Pletos

I wanted to try the specialty of this eating place: Ayam Sambal Pletos after which the restaurant got its name.

Ayam Geprek

Gado gado

How was Ayam Sambal Pletos? If you have eaten Ayam Penyet or Ayam Geprek, in the end, all the chicken would taste the same and what made it different would be the "sambal" [ground chili].

Thanks Mr. Arif, an ex-student of SMK Taman Universiti, for the company. Until we meet again for our next lunch/dinner/supper date.

MY (ONLY) TANJUNG BALAI GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE

6th FEBRUARY 2019 ~ We went to this restaurant twice for lunch for the two days we were in Tanjung Balai. Nurhayati Restaurant was located right opposite Darul Karim Mosque and from outside, so we hopped in instantly.

There were many other Malay/Muslim restaurants in town but do not be surprised to see there are Chinese praying altars in the shops. This is because the owners of the premise could be a Chinese and restaurant operators were renting the place.

lunch day #1
Not only the people spoke the same language like Malaysians, but the food also tasted the same.

We had a long chat with the cook (and the restaurant owner), Mr. Muhammad Noor, who was very friendly. He had worked in Johor before and we managed to get some tips of where to go and what to do (which he honestly informed there was not much actually).

lunch day #2
I found the prices of the food was slightly high, especially for lunch on the second day, which cost us about 100 000 Rupiah for two people (equals to RM30). We did not have much gastronomic adventure though as the hotel provided lunch as well in the package and we were only staying in Tanjung Balai for one night.

JOGJA GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE - PONDOK CABE

7th February 2016 ~ When visiting Indonesia, the best activity is to savour its authentic local food. And in Jogjakarta, most of the restaurants serve halal food so there is no reason not to try, unless you are a very fussy person or someone whose taste bud does not accept international cooked dishes.

After clearing the immigration, our tour husband and wife guides, Pak Rustam and Ibu Narni, took us to this restaurant called Pondok Cabe. [translate: Chili Hut]. Food was ordered and served on the table and everyone was extremely hungry, I did not even remember to take photos of the dishes. Everything was delicious and we were ready to continue with our next itinerary.

There was a small stall in the restaurant displaying local snacks and I learned that Jogjakarta is synonymous with this sweet cake named "Bakpia".

The restaurant also has delivery service so people could enjoy its sensational hot (or spicy) food (as stated on the restaurant's signboard) by ordering from home.

ENTERTAINING TWO (OLD) FRIENDS FROM KUALA LUMPUR

Thursday, 2nd May ~ When two (old) friends from KL informed me that they would be going to Johor Premium Outlet and a dinner date might be possible after that, I got extremely excited. Not knowing where to take them for good food, I quickly posted on my FB, asking my colleagues of this particular restaurant in Taman Universiti, asking whether it was good or not. After reading the positive responses, I decided we would go Indonesian for the evening.

Right after school, and after these ladies had done shopping, I went to fetch them at JPO, and then only drove to Taman Universiti, while they followed from behind.  The name of the restaurant is Santap Sunda Sawargi, by the way. We started ordering and asking around before going helped a lot in deciding the menu for dinner.

What we had were: nasi embel of grilled fish and chicken, fish in sambal (chilli paste), prawn and squid sate, and lastly, for dessert, a variety of fruit cocktails.

The food was good, The price was reasonable. And most importantly, the guests and the host were very happy.

They had to make their move by 9:30 p.m. as they had to drive all the way back to KL. Thanks Hazlina Aziz and Suzanni Amin for the short visit. Next time you come to JB, we go and eat some more. :)
