JOONGANG-RO UNDERGROUND SHOPPING MALL IN JEJU CITY

This was the place we went to in the city to (window) shop, called Joongang-ro. And it is located underground. Basically, this was the hub for (1) beauty and skincare products (2) fashion related items and accessories. Hence, there was nothing (or not much) that I could buy here. As if I really shop in the first place.

So that was the end of the first day exploration of Jeju City. The city tour was already completed, and we would be venturing to the other parts of the island for the other two days.

MY BINGSU SESSION WITH AN ACADEMICIAN IN JEJU CITY

Miss Sakinah had to meet her foster parent and we were asked to tag along. The meeting was held at a coffee shop, from what I could see on the sign board, but we did not drink any coffee. We were here to meet  Professor Kim who is currently teaching in Jeju Polytechnic and enjoy the cooling and refreshing Korean Bingsu.

Bingsu is "a Korean shaved ice dessert with sweet toppings such as chopped fruit, condensed milk, fruit syrup and Adzuki beans". [Wikipedia] It is similar to our own ABC dessert but shamelessly I would say Bingsu is much nicer. It is time for us to transform our ABC to become a healthier dessert at least by adding fruit slices in it.

It was only a very short meeting and it was glad to have a conversation with a real Korean. Hope to see Professor Kim again if she comes to Malaysia.

OUTSIDE DONGMUN MARKET PLACE

I remembered entering the market known as Jung-Ang Ru but when I was at the exit, it was actually the entrance to Dongmun Market. So the two market are actually connected to each other, I supposed.

There were also many other stalls selling all sorts of fruits and street food. I stopped to buy a cup of mulberry, something I remembered eating (or something similar) when I was in New Zealand.

Then we went to this stall where there was an old lady busy at work. She was selling HOTTOK (not hot dog) - something like a pancake filled with sugar and fried in oil. And this hottok sold like hot cakes, literally. According to Miss Sakinah, the tourist guide, there would be a long queue during winter as people love to eat this snack when it is cold outside.

It was much easier to eat all the available halal food almost anytime when there is a"local" tour around. If you are planning o visit Jeju in the near future and are looking for a (Muslim) guide, feel free to contact Miss Sakinah at her Jeju Muslim Tour FB Page.

VISITING THE MARKET IN JEJU CITY - PART TWO

In the market, we could find a lot of sea products and they looked really fresh. For seafood lovers, this should be the place to go. There were also small restaurants operating where you could eat the seafood fresh from the aquarium straight into the pan.

We were here just to "window shop" as we had no plan of cooking anything on our own. But how I wish I could do that.
