THE THURSDAY MORNING MARKET IN PENAGA

15TH MAY 2025    ~ After the hosts had finished shopping at Penaga Market, we then went out and walked between the canopies on the right and left sides of the roads. There were more people here compared to the market in the permanent building.

According to my friend who is the original resident of the town before moving away to Kuantan, the morning market is known as Thursday Market among the locals. It is held twice a week and the other one is operating on Sunday morning, which attracts more people and there are more stalls too.

One thing for sure, I found the items on sale, especially the seafood and fruits were cheaper than what we could get back home.

Thanks again to both Puan Suhana and Mr. Fakhrul for taking me to the market. I enjoyed myself a lot despite the fact that the sellers thought I was an officer form an agency/a department making my rounds at the market when they saw me clicking photos with my camera. [Puan Suhana overheard their conversation while shopping].  😀

THE MORNING MARKET UNDER THE RUBBER TREES

20th DECEMBER 2024    ~ From Alor Setar, Kedah, we crossed over to another state, Perlis, just to visit the morning market there. The special feature of the market was that the business was carried out under the shades of the rubber trees. The market was known among the locals as Nat Pokok Getah which was located in Pauh, Arau.

Miss Siti Khadijah Ibrahim, my ex-colleague of SMK Dato' Jaafar, and I, just walked around the place, hoping to busy something special or unique from this place.

The were a lot of stall selling food items, like food for breakfast and traditional/local snacks. Then there were fish, seafood, poultry, fruits and vegetables.

the only food I bought

It was like another Pasar Tani [translate: farmer's market] and we were informed that the market was more interesting if you come on Sunday. On one hand, there was not much that could be bought. On the other hand, we decided to go to another place where real shopping would happen.

BREAKFAST HUNTING AT LA NGU MARKET ONE FRIDAY MORNING

22ND NOVEMBER 2024 ~ We started our second day in Thailand early. At about 7:00 a.m. we were moving out from the hotel, heading to La Ngu, a small town near Pakbara. The main objective: hunting for street food for breakfast.

The place was about to get busy when we arrived. It was the regular wet market, with stalls on the left and right side of the roads, selling mostly vegetables and fruits. The items on sale looked really fresh, too bad we could buy them. [My friends bought some fruits though]

As there was Muslim community in this area, halal food was in abundance. There was so much choice and the prices were reasonable and I would say cheaper than what we have at home.

We even stopped at other stalls by the roadside to see if there would anything interesting to buy. And we still ended up buying something.

If you are lucky, you would get to meet locals at the food stalls who could speak Malay language or at least some basic and essential phrases. Business transaction was always possible even with the language barrier.

We had got enough food to savour for breakfast to bring to our hotel.
