SEARCHING FOR THE GATE IN CHIANG MAI

Chiang Mai is actually an ancient city. The old city of Chiang Mai is surrounded by wall of red bricks and a moat. I took the effort to walk and find one of the historical gates - which was very near to the Saturday market.

Here, visitors could see the remaining wall which was built many centuries ago. There are actually many other gates around but I was too lazy to walk and explore (and due to time constraint).

The place near the gate was quite busy late in the evening when I was there. Besides the Saturday night market, there were also food stalls along the moat by the roadside, which could be another attraction of the place.

EXPLORING NORORIT MARKET IN THE AFTERNOON

Nororit Market is not a touristy place. I was there to see what it had to offer and found there were more things that could be bought and brought home. My pick: preserved strawberries, mango and longan which could be bought by the kilogramme.

There were varieties of food-based products on sale here, you could be spoiled for choice.

the Thai "dodol"

I was lucky to see this young lady selling t-shirts at a much cheaper price than the night market.

There was another market that I went exploring in the morning called Meung Mai Market. Do come back for more story and photos later.

THE (FREE) CULTURAL SHOWS IN CHIANG MAI CITY

I was looking forward to watching any Thai cultural shows when I was in Chiang Mai and ready to part with my cash. However, I was told the cultural show available would come together with dinner so I had to let go.

I guess I was lucky to come across this mall at the night market where there were these cultural performances for two consecutive nights. And the performances were FREE OF CHARGE. Nevertheless, audience were expected to contribute some tips for the performers at the end of each segment.

And here is a sample of a traditional dance being performed when I was there. Other videos of the shows are still being uploaded on Youtube. Do check them out later.

BOOK REVIEW: "I AM MALALA"

Malala is a girl who once lived in a place called Swat in Pakistan.

She was one brave young lady who fought hard for education and was almost killed when she was shot in the head by a Taliban man.

She believed that only education could change one's destiny, especially women's. And she was firm with her stand although she had to risk it all.

You have to read this book on your own to see the misery she had to go through just to be educated.

For one thing, after reading the book, I am always thankful for the kind of life I have. Sometimes I feel that life is hard and unfair, but somewhere out there, other people are praying hard to live another day.

WAT PHRA THAT DOI SUTHEP - A TEMPLE ON TOP OF A HILL

This is one of the prominent tourist spots in Chiang Mai. The temple (or "wat" in Thai) is located on top of a hill which requires visitors to climb up 309 steps to reach the building. *panting*

There were just too many people around, both locals and tourists alike. To get myself photographed without anyone in the background was almost impossible. People either came here to admire the fine architecture or to pray. I could see some people were there to see the monk on duty, most probably to get the blessing from the holy man.

I felt a bit slimmer right after this (challenging) trip but the feeling did not last that long.
