SPOT THE ERROR 105

The common verb to be/helping verb error among Malaysians.

Thanks to Miss Yamunaa Sithamparan, an ex-student of mine, for contributing this.

MOVIE REVIEW - "DUNKIRK"

The two last movies I watched at the cinema were "Moana" and "Sing" last year in December. After seven long months, I had finally the chance to do one of my favourite pastime activities.

I chose "Dunkirk" - a fictional war movie involving the British and Germany. The British soldiers were stranded on the beach of France and the effort to get them back home was all in vain as the ships were all bombed and sank. The local fishermen from Dunkirk and all nearby places bravely set sail on the English Channel and put them aboard on their all kinds of boats.

The plot was quite simple actually, the drama was light but the movie was brilliantly done to depict a real war story, old school style. I know I have made a wise decision to choose "Dunkirk" instead of "Spiderman" or "Baby Driver".

ATTENDING LIYANA'S WEDDING RECEPTION

The wedding reception for Miss Liyana Mohd. Nasir [SMKTUN's SPM batch 2006] was held today at Rumah Alumni UTM. I arrived there at about 3:15 p.m. and a group of my ex-classmates ex-students were already eating.

There were more people when it came to the photo-shooting sessions with the bride and groom.

Wishing Liyana and her husband a happy and blessed married life.

The post wedding reception session: having iced-coffee and sundaes at McD. The weather has been very hot these few days.

BOYS' DAY OUT

A date was finally set with Mr. Amirul Husni [SMKTUN's SPM batch 2010] for an outing trip after all the lengthy planning. So we decided to go to Aeon Tebrau City as it is near to my house. Basically what we did were:

(1) watch a movie.

(2) ate dinner at Chicken Rice Shop.
(3) walked around the shopping mall.
(4) went to buy a few things at Aeon Shopping Centre.

Only my second time here and I must confess the chicken rice was really tasty. I don't mind going again.

I even met an old schoolmate from SMS Muar at the restaurant. We had not met since we left school so that must have been 30 years ago.

(5) To conclude the meeting, we had coffee at McD's McCafe at Setia Tropika.

Thanks Mr. Husni for the time and the company. Let's do this again some other time, soon.

A LATE LUNCH AFTER A SCHOOL MEETING OUTSIDE

To be able to get out from school earlier (before 3:00 p.m.) seldom happens nowadays. Most of the time, I could only spend more time for myself after work when I have to attend meetings outside and the sessions finish earlier. To get the opportunity to meet up with friends or ex-student(s) over coffee is actually a great privilege. How I miss the good old  days. *sigh*

Thanks Mr. Syazwan Shavarein for the treat at AEON Bukit Indah's Secret Recipe even though the session lasted only for about 90 minutes.

"KAD RAYA" PROJECT 3.0

This should be the third year for us, members of  UPM TESL class of 1993, to carry out the annual project of sending real greeting cards to celebrate Eid. There were less cards arriving this year and I think people got too busy this time.

Another group participating was my Budiman classmates of SMS Muar class of 1986 and this was the second time for us doing this.

Sending greeting cards is not as easy as you think. First, you need to buy the cards and write them. Second, you have to go to the post office, buy and stick the stamps on the envelopes before posting them to the loved ones. It might look simple but it requires a lot of determination and postponing any of the steps mentioned above could leave all the cards not being sent away at all.

Thanks to my friends for all the lovely "Kad Raya" and we shall continue doing this for many more years to come.

THE 28TH DAY OF EID 1438H

22nd JULY 2017 ~ I was back at Fortune Hills today for an "aqiqah" event, only for the session when visitors could enjoy the food. I was invited by Dr. Shafiq Shahmi Mat Rebi (SMKTUN's SPM batch 2004) and this was actually the second "aqiqah" ceremony held, for the second child. There was also his younger brother from SPM batch 2009, Mr. Afifi.

Before that I went to attend a wedding at SMK St. Joseph and met the second Principal of SMK Taman Universiti there. It has been a very long time since I last met her.

I think that should conclude the Eid celebration for this year. I am glad that I had the chance to see many people, a few I have already forgotten their names actually as we only meet once in a year. Until the next Eid...

THE 27TH DAY OF EID 1438H

21st JULY 2017 ~ I was at Dr. Azzad's [SMKTUN's SPM batch 2002] house right after "Maghrib" prayer to attend his open house for Eid at Fortune Hills. There were not many people at that time so I should have chosen the right time. His younger sister, Dr. Azaty Hamzah [SPM batch 2004] was also there and this was kind of our once a year only meeting for us.

Then I was off to Taman Universiti as I was invited to a "tahlil" and "aqiqah" ceremony hosted by Mr. Solleh [SPM batch 2006] and his family. The "aqiqah" was meant for the daughter of Mr. Zahari. There were many other ex-students who were present so the chit-chatting session dragged on and I had to force myself to leave before 11.00 p.m.

Two more days before Eid ends and I am already fatter. *sigh*

THE 26TH DAY OF EID 1438H - PART TWO

20TH JULY 2017 ~ This should be the earliest batch of SMKTUN's ex-students who came visiting this year, from SPM batch 1999. They used to be regular visitors once but disappeared for many years. However, they were making a comeback this time but were accompanied with their wives and kids. Glad they could make it this time after all these years.

THE 26TH DAY OF EID 1438H - PART ONE

The English teachers of SMK Taman Universiti, the present and the past, were gathered at Puan Aliah's house at Taman Seri Pulai Perdana on the 26th day of Eid. The quiet house was suddenly filled with gossips and laughter, which definitely was endless.

Thanks to the host for the warmth and hospitality as well as for cooking the delicious dishes for us. I am looking forward to seeing each other again in our next gathering. (attn: Miss Cheong)

THE 25TH DAY OF EID 1438H

With 5 more days to go, three ex-students of SMKTUN from SPM batch 2006 came visiting. The one who is now residing in KL was here with a mission - to hand over an invitation card.

someone's getting married real soon

I wonder whether I will be getting more visitors from this group of ex-students for Eid next year.
