THE IFTAR AND MOREH SESSION OUTSIDE

14TH MARCH 2026    ~ An Iftar [breaking fast] date was set with my regular gastronomic buddy, Mr. Redzuan. The last time we met to enjoy good food was 24 days ago, one day before Ramadhan started.

In-house Soy Sauce

The chosen restaurant was Padi House located in Setia Eco Garden, a place that was far away from the crowd and traffic jam on a busy weekend as many people went out to shop and eat out as well. The place was dully occupied and it was a wise decision to make a reservation earlier in the afternoon.

I had been to one of its branches in Subang Jaya last year [READ HERE]. I just got to know about the existence of this restaurant in Johor Bahru recently.

Watermelon Juice

Fish Chips

Red Velvet Cake

Chicken Chop

We decided to get the Iftar Meal Set, and I could see many diners choosing the same option as well.

It was just a short sit-in session as we had to hurry for our series of prayers and we adjourned to the nearby Surau [as small scale community mosque].

Iced Milk Green Tea

Kaya Toast

After the Terawikh prayers, the one that are only performed in the month of Ramadhan, we then went for Moreh, the supper session specifically after the Terawikh prayers, at a Mamak called Thoufeeq in Taman Pulai Mutiara.

With just a few more days to go for fasting, that would be my last Iftar outside this year. Thanks to Mr. Redzuan for the time and company. Hopefully our gastronomic adventure will resume immediately after fasting ends.

MY FIRST MOREH SESSION OUTSIDE FOR RAMADHAN 1446H

Moreh is a common practice of having supper after performing Terawikh prayers in the month of Ramadhan. Most of the time, people at the mosques or suraus [the smaller community mosque] but they could also opt to do it outside.

Mr. Haikal Johari, an ex-student of SMK Taman Universiti, was back in Johor Bahru and there was also a need for me to see him. Hence, a short Moreh session was set at Restoran Aliff, a Mamak restaurant near my house. We just shared Roti Sardin [flat bread with sardine filling] as we were still full from the meal we had had for breaking fast, and Teh Tarik.

It was just a short meeting but the discussion was done successfully. He would need to drive back to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow and I need to sleep early to wake up for my Sahur session before dawn. Hopefully the programmes for the coming month of May would be materialised as planned.

THE LAST MOREH SESSION FOR RAMADHAN 1445H

7TH APRIL 2024 ~ A Moreh date was set with an ex-student of Asrama Semai Bakti Felda, Mr. Solihin Ramli. The chosen venue was Food Fashion Restaurant located at Dataran Larkin. I had heard of this place before and this was my first time there.

GLOSSARY:
MOREH - the supper session after the Terawikh prayers.
TERAWIKH - the prayers performed only in the month of Ramadhan at night.

We met at about 10:00 p.m. but there were still many people who came to dine in at that hour.

Thanks Mr. Solihin for the treat and the company. Congratulations in advance on the announcement of the coming big event in your life that should be happening by next week. Guess this kind of meeting would be happening again after this once you are formally taken. 😀

THE MOREH SESSION WITH EX-COLLEAGUES

28th MARCH 2024    ~ My friends [of SMK Dato' Jaafar] had the Breaking Fast and Terawikh Prayer event in school. As usual, a Moreh session was set right with the male colleagues after the programme at B-Point Restaurant which was near the school. This had been like an annual activity for us.

       GLOSSARY:
MOREH - the supper session after the Terawikh prayers.
TERAWIKH - the prayers performed only in the month of Ramadhan at night.

Other than me who was no longer in school, another friend who is now attached to the State Education Department, was also there.

It was just a short session as it was getting late, but it was always great to get to see my friends again. The next gathering should be the Eid visit to my house.

MY VERY FIRST MOREH SESSION [OUTSIDE] FOR THE FASTING MONTH THIS YEAR

GLOSSARY:

Terawikh: prayers that are done at night, only in the month of Ramadhan, the fasting month.
Moreh: the supper session after the Terawikh prayers.

We had the Iftar Jama'ie [Breaking Fast Together] and Terawikh Prayers at school this evening. Once the programmes were over, it would be the best time to go Moreh at the B-Point restaurant near the school.

One group member who had been promoted and transferred to other school was also there to join the supper session. Guess, Once a Jaafarian Always a Jaafarian.

I wonder this would be this first and the last Moreh session of the year.

MY HOMETOWN GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE : ALMIZAN SATAY HOUSE IN KAMPUNG MELAYU

18th MAY 2019 ~ A date for "moreh" (a light meal taken after the "terawikh" prayer in the month of Ramadhan) was set with a group of ex-students of SMK Taman Universiti SPM batch 2006.

Nowadays it would be a rare opportunity to hang out with them as either they are occupied with their work or family.

The initial plan was to meet at the famous Murtabak Kampung Melayu. However, all the stalls were closed early in the fasting month. So we went to Mr. Solleh's original plan to go to Almizan Satay House which was nearby. Luckily the restaurant was still opened at 11:00 p.m.

This was my first time here even though I have been seeing the shop every time I pass the area along the regular route I use to drive along.

This should be another option of where I could take my friends to have dinner when they come to Johor Bahru. The satay is highly recommended.

Thanks to all - Mr. Hamzah, Mr. Aminuddin and Mr. Suhaizie and thanks Mr. Solleh for the treat. It was great to be able to sit down and chat over food, just like old time.
