'TIS THE SEASON TO DO BAKING - PART TWO

7th October ~ the second group consisting of 4 girls and 14 boys came at 10:00 to bake more cupcakes. The boys looked excited nonetheless. With the guidance given by Puan Suzana and their determination to learn new things, the session was a great success.

Thanks again to Puan Suzana Sidek for her time and energy in conducting the baking session again. This has been our fourth year and she had never said "no" to my request. Hopefully we can bake again next year.

As for the Set A1 students, please do not forget to hand in your essay when we meet in our next English class.

'TIS THE SEASON TO DO BAKING - PART ONE

7th October ~ The baking session was back for the form one students in the set I am teaching. Everyone was very excited to do something real, rather than looking at illustration on paper before they were asked to write essays on process and procedures. Thanks to Puan Suzana Sidek, the Home Science teacher who has been helping me for many years to carry out this lesson.

This year we did some changes to the cupcakes, it used to be vanilla cupcakes with raisins but this year we were making chocolate cupcakes topped with chocolate ganache. 19 girls attended the first slot from 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. while the other half of the class would have to attend the second slot.

Everything went well. They managed to finish the activities on time so that the second group could use the place as planned.

THE YOUNG MASTERCHEFS IN ACTION

TOPIC: Process and Procedures - How to Make Cup Cakes
OBJECTIVES: At the end of the session, the students should be able to (1) Read, listen and understand instructions on how to make cup cakes: (2) Write a informal letter describing the process of making cup cakes.

The baking session was here again for the form one students. With the help of two Home Economics/Living Skills teachers, we were back in the kitchen to make our own cup cakes. Everybody was excited, and it could be the first time for some people, surprisingly, breaking an egg.

The class was divided into two groups: the girls came at 7:30 a.m. with full attendance while the boys at 10:00 a.m. but with a few people missing in action.

Let's just take a look at our young masterchefs in action:

Everybody went home with their cupcakes to be shown to (and eaten by) their parents and I am sure they would be very proud of their kids. Thanks a lot to Puan Suzana Sidek and Puan Zaini Yahya for their help in making the session a great success. See you again in the kitchen next year.

BAKING CUP CAKES FOR MY ENGLISH CLASS

It was time for my 1KP1 students to bake for my English class as they were doing writing with the theme of process and procedures. I started this session last year and decided to do it again with a new batch of students. They were divided into two groups as the room could only accommodate half of the class at one time.

THE GIRLS' GROUP

17 girls turned up as early as 7:30 a.m. and the enthusiasm could be seen on the faces of each and every one of them. 7 groups worked in pairs while there was one group which consisted of three people.

THE BOYS' GROUP

step 1: listen and observe

When only five boys turned up at the Home Science Room, I was at first a bit disappointed. Nothing could be done - you could not force people who did not want to learn. As the saying goes, you can always bring a donkey to a well, but you cannot force it to drink. Nevertheless, there was always a blessing in disguise. The boys could do their individual baking and as there were three spaces left, three teachers had to fill in the spaces, including me.

From observation, even though there were only five boys, they worked much faster than the girls. Most probably because they had no one to talk to while doing their work so they could concentrate more on what they were doing.

"everything you can do, I can do better,
I can do everything better than you."

At the end of the session, the participants looked very tired (exaggeration) but were very happy indeed with the fruits of their labour. And hopefully, they had taken home the cup cakes home for their parents to see and make them proud.

So thanks a lot to Puan Suzana Sidek for all the time spent for us, Miss Lekha [UTM English trainee teacher] for helping us throughout the session and not forgetting Puan Zaini Yahya for letting use the Home Science Room and the cooking utensils. Hopefully we can do this again next year.

P.S. As for the 1KP1 students, do not forget to pass up your essay in class next week.
