MY HAT YAI GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE - HAVING LUNCH AT CHALEE D'HATYAI

3rd DECEMBER 2019 ~ We had a proper meal for lunch on the second day at a halal restaurant recommended by the tuk tuk driver waiting in front of the hotel. He took us to this place named Chalee D'hatyai which had a very beautiful landscape and traditional building.

We had rice, vegetables, chicken, fish, fried egg and most importantly the tom yum. I must say the tom yum was really delicious or was it because we were extremely hungry. It was actually a bit late for lunch but some people were too busy shopping at the market for the second time.

If you like good food in Hat Yai, then I would not hesitate to suggest Chalee D'hatyai to you. I will come back for its tom yum again.

WALKING AROUND PRINCE SONGKHLA UNIVERSITY HAT YAI CAMPUS

3rd DECEMBER 2019 ~ I was walking around the campus of Songkhla Prince University Hat Yai because I was wondering if I could get any public transport to take me back to the city or if there was any free wi-fi so I could find a Grab. (I could not find any).

Here are some interesting facts I found about Prince Songkhla University [PSU] from its website:

  • PSU is the first university established in Southern Thailand.
  • Other than Hat Yai, there are other four campuses: Pattani, Phuket, Trang and Surat Thani.
  • Hat Yai campus is the main campus which has the biggest numbers of faculties - among which are the Medicine and Nursing faculties.

In the Hat Yai campus, there are many faculties. However, the one faculty which I find the most interesting is the Faculty of Thai Traditional Medicine. How cool is that?

I could see the university students wearing uniforms walking to their classes, unlike other places where students are free to wear whatever they want. I could even see many Muslim girls in the campus as they were wearing their hijabs/head scarves.

I am glad had done this brief academic visit in the city of Hat Yai, or else it would only eating and shopping activities throughout my stay there. 😁

PRINCESS MAHA CHAKRI SIRINDHORN NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM [PART 2]

3rd DECEMBER 2019 ~There were not many people at the museum when I was there. It was definitely not an attraction to people who visited Hat Yai. However, I met a Malaysian family who came to the museum, there were 6 of them I think. I was lucky as one of them was kind enough to book a Grab car for me to get back to the hotel as there was no free wi-fi detected. 😊

Other than to educate the public, this museum also acts as a research, training and conservation centre.

If you wonder why the museum is named after Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, this because, being an educated and learned person, she had a very deep interest in Science, natural resources and environment. There are even a few species of flora and fauna named after here upon discoveries.

My hat's off to all the people who are involved in making this place a museum of high standard. A lot of money must have been spent and will need more to maintain this place, but it is worth every single baht.  A museum is not just a place for tourists to visit, but it is also an educational avenue to nourish one's hungry soul for knowledge and  experience.

PRINCESS MAHA CHAKRI SIRINDHORN NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM [PART 1]

3rd DECEMBER 2019 - My other travel mates seemed not to be interested to visit a museum so I decided to go there on my own right after the trip to the market. I had searched for this place on the internet and it looked interesting. The name of the museum is already a mouthful: Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhron Natural History Museum.

I took a Grab Car from the hotel and there was this interesting piece of conversation between the driver and me.

DRIVER: Are you a teacher?
ME: How do you know?
DRIVER: Because you go to the museum.
😁

The driver confessed that he did not even know the museum existed until the moment he had to send me there. And his wife is a teacher too.

The museum is actually located in Prince Songkhla University, Hat Yai Campus. The museum is managed and administered by the university's Faculty of Science. I am impressed with their effort and ability to establish and run with a museum of a very high standard.

This should be a great place for people to learn new things, especially the young ones. Museum should be an avenue to educate society hence more money should be contributed so as to make sure the responsible party could develop and maintain one of the nation's resource centres.

the tooth of an elephant

The museum exhibited quite a large number of collections of flora and fauna and one would need more time to explore this place.
