EID 1438 IS FINALLY HERE

One of the things people do is to create their own e-greeting cards to be posted on social media such as Facebook. And I managed to find the five pieces of "work of art" as early as 2013.

THE BIRTHDAY SURPRISE AND ALL THE DRAMA BEHIND IT

Three girls were excited to surprise their friend on his birthday. They decided to buy something online (on Facebook) and get it delivered.

The birthday boy was surprised to see two strangers at the office door, bearing TWO balloons and a chocolate bouquet. One of them even sang a birthday song to him.

When the three girls saw the photo after the delivery, they were MORE surprised as the items sent were not similar to what had been advertised. So the birthday surprise plan worked real well.

The senders were really unhappy and in fact they were fuming with anger. Both the senders and the recipient felt cheated. The girls wrote comments on the "company's" FB page, airing their dissatisfaction and contacted the "manager" personally.

that's more like it

And today another chocolate bouquet arrived at the office, as a replacement to the one delivered yesterday, sent by the manager herself.

the cat does not come together with the chocolate

The birthday boy is happy as he has now more chocolates to eat.

The three girls are happier as the birthday boy will now grow fatter than them.

They all learned a lesson and they would definitely not forget this drama for many more years to come.

THE END

P.S. I decided not to disclose the name of the "company" as they had already sent me a better looking chocolate bouquet.

WHAT DO BIRTHDAYS MEAN TO ME?

At this tender age of ____ (fill in the blank), birthdays will be something I am NOT looking forward to. I always pray hard people will not ask me to cut cake while singing the birthday song. To be a year older is not something you should be happy about. Seriously, I would want the day to pass very quickly so that I do not have to be further embarrassed. *blush* I am a shy person, you know.

Anyway it is customary for friends and acquaintances to wish one well on his/her birthday. With the existence of social media, like Facebook and Whatsapp, saying "Happy Birthday" is something that can be done at the click of the keyboard. On the other hand, the tradition of sending birthday cards is something that people no longer do.

Like it or not, birthdays are the time when people near and far, wish you a happier and better life. In a way, those words are prayers for you and to have hundreds of people wishing you for better things in life is actually having a lot of people offering their prayers just for you on your birthday. In fact, according to the Arab tradition, it is compulsory for you to be reciprocal. For example, when a friend wishes you "May good bless you", then it would be your responsibility to reply, "May god bless you too."

With that, I would hereby like to thank everybody, friends, students, ex-students, parents and the committee members of the Parents and Teachers Association :) for all the birthday wishes sent via Facebook, Whatsapp, Telegram, SMS etc. I know that you have all taken a great effort to do just that and to know that I am still remembered, is a feeling that will make me realize that life is not that bad after all. I will need some time to read all the messages and respond to them as I used to do but today I am exhausted and a bit under the weather (after the angklung performance in UTM).

To my friends from SMK Taman Universiti, thanks a lot for the birthday cake and the present. You should have not done that after all. You should all know how leaving you, broke my heart into pieces. *wipe my tears away but this is an exaggeration*

Thanks once again, from the bottom of my heart, and I love you all.
(I really want to write "I love you very strong".)

THE FIRST TIME WINNING A CONTEST IN MY LIFE

Have you ever taken part in contests before? Remember the time when you have to attach together proof of purchase with the entry form and/or write a slogan? Or perhaps trying your luck in a crossword puzzle contest or even a colouring contest organized by children's magazines when you were much younger? I must confess I have tried numerous times and sadly speaking, have never won any

However, last week, I FINALLY won a prize in an online contest. I am a member of this group "Johor English Teachers" in one my Facebook accounts and Puan Rohani Ariffin was kind enough to sponsor the prizes for the Contest #3 which she initiated. (I took part in the first one and did not win). I won as I had 4 LIKES from members who had read my very short paragraph. :)

The prizes arrived in school today and I was excited to no end. Thanks Puan Rohani for the prizes and I will treasure them.

THE TASK:
Below is a very short story by Augusto Monterosso, a Guatemalan short story writer. You may not believe it and think it is just a sentence. But it actually IS a complete very short story called "El Dinosaurio".

"When I woke up, the dinosaur was still there.

Your task is to include this story in YOUR OWN story. It can appear in the beginning, the middle, or as and ending of your 'story' in not more than 100 words.

And here is my winning entry:

I always wanted a present, something expensive. I was expecting a Samsung Note. I had done well in school. In fact, I had topped the other students in my class. I ran back home, clutching my report card in my right hand. I knew I deserved to be awarded for all my effort. My father smiled and promised to bring home the present. The next day, I almost fainted when I saw what my father got for me - it was Barnie. I ran to my room and cried my heart out. When I woke up, the dinosaur was still there. [100 words]

I must say the most difficult part was to make sure the writing did not exceed 100 words and the continuous counting of words before publishing it a few minutes before the time stated. I wish I had drawn columns like I used to teach my students when writing a summary.

Anyway, contest #4 is already publicized and that is one challenging task to complete. Perhaps, I should wait until the last minute for the creative juices to start flowing freely.

SPOT THE ERROR 32

One of the many things that we can do on Facebook is to post inspiring quotation or words of wisdom online. It is very interesting though, despite the good intention, sometimes the meaning has totally changed because of the grammar error that is found in it.

This is just one example of the aforesaid issue. Theme: the end of Ramadhan and the arrival of the month of Syawal.

I wonder what will "shaitan" (satan) be releasing? The writer must have some problems in passive sentence construction.

SPOT THE ERROR 19 - FROM FACEBOOK APPLICATION

This is an application you can use in your Facebook to know how you are going to die, and this should be something funny. However there is a GLARING error on the tombstone. Can you spot it?

[Thanks to Tseng Seng Guan for giving me permission to use his tombstone for my blog] :)

It is scary though to know how you are going to meet the angel of death. I do pray that I will die an easy death or at least, I will not trouble other people. And with that, I wish you all a Happy New Year. *confetti flying down from the sky*
