THE NIGHT MARKET IN BAYAN LEPAS REVISITED

   17th MAY 2025    ~ After attending the wedding in Sungai Petani, Kedah, [READ HERE] I had to cross over to Penang as I need to catch my flight home from Penang Airport. As usual, I had a stopover at a friend's house in Bayan Lepas. With a few hours more to kill, Puan Aishah Aboo Bakar and her husband decided to visit the Pasar Malam [translate: Night Market] near their house in Jalan Mahkamah.

This was my second time here at the Pasar Malam. The first time I visited this weekly market was back in 2023. [READ HERE]

As for the lovely husband-and-wife couple, they had not been at this place for many years and they made a comeback as there was a visitor and they had to play hosts. 😀

Even though Penang is always flocked by tourists all year long, this place was not an attraction to them. I think I was the only [local] tourist at that time who was busy taking photos.

There were so many things on sale and the temptation to buy the food items was hard to resist. We ended up buying a variety of delicacies from the stalls for dinner to bring home.

Thanks again to Puan Aishah [a friend of UPM TESL Class of 1993] and Mr. Arif for the short trip to Pasar Malam. We should do this again, perhaps at other venues in Penang when I make a return trip in the future.

THE [EARLY] POST WEDDING RECEPTION SUPPER SESSION AT BAYAN LEPAS

  

   21ST DECEMBER 2024    ~ After attending the wedding reception of a TESL friend's son in Royale Chulan in Georgetown, Mr. Ridwan, his family and I went to get our supper. The session happened most probably because it was too early to get back to the hotel but we were not that sure what else to do. We still went to Nasi Kandar Beratur 786 Restaurant in Bayan Lepas even though we were still full.

We just had something light and we still managed to empty the plate before leaving.

There were still more gastronomic adventures happening in Penang with the Ridwan's the very next day before I caught my flight home to Johor Bahru.

THE UNPLANNED GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE IN BAYAN LEPAS

   24th NOVEMBER 2024    ~ The stay in Bayan Lepas, Penang, was unplanned. Hence, we had also an unplanned gastronomic adventure.

The chosen restaurant was Kapitan which was near the hotel where we were staying. Thank God for that as I had had enough of Thai food already, after the 4D3N stay.

At 9:00 p.m., the restaurant was still full with customers dining in. The conclusion made is this should be a popular eating place here. Everything cost us about RM90 and I think we could get more delicious food in Hatyai a few days ago with the same amount of money. No wonder Malaysians are flocking into the neighbouring country during weekends, public holidays or school holidays.

There was a 7-Eleven store nearby and I went in with Mr. Ridwan and his daughter.

From the observation, comparatively speaking, I would say 7-Eleven outlets in Thailand were more exciting and entertaining, with variety of products to choose from. No wonder Malaysians flock into these convenient stores to shop when they go visiting.

The 7-Eleven top people should do something, considering we are now receiving stream of tourists into the country. They could make the stores a part of the attractions too, like what they do in Thailand.

BLOGGING FROM BAYAN LEPAS, PENANG

This is an unplanned trip to Penang actually. We decided to put up a night in Raia Hotel, Bayan Lepas, as we had had a long trip from Hatyai going back into Malaysian border. A short stop for some rest would suffice and we would start our journey back to Shah Alam tomorrow morning.

Here is a summary of our road trip today:

11.00 Checked out from Hatyai.

12.15 Arrived in Sakom. Went to the market, and had lunch.

15:00 Left Sakom.

16:00 Arrived at Thai Immigration Checkpoint

[17:00 Malaysian Time, Durian Burung Immigration Checkpoint]

19:30 Checked in at Raia Hotel, Penang.

We plan to push off at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow and I have to catch a flight to Johor Bahru from Subang Airport at 16:10 [retimed from the original schedule at 16:00].

MY LATE LUNCH/EARLY DINNER DATE AT QUEENSBAY MALL IN BAYAN LEPAS

2ND JUNE 2024 ~ Before leaving Penang, a late lunch/early dinner date with a friend [of TESL UPM Class of 1993], a true blue Penangite, Puan Aishah Aboo Bakar. The chosen venue to meet up was Queensbay Mall in Bayan Lepas. That was my first time there and I arrived a bit too early for the meeting [READ HERE].

We first met at AEON Food Court and she was with her friend at that time. Then only we went to this restaurant called "Dandy". It bore a western name but actually served Arab food, and you could already see the Baklava sold at the entrance.

I chose to eat Lamb Rice which was super yummy while Puan Aishah opted for something light, a plate of Nachos.

After that we adjourned to the nearby Coffee Shop to get our coffee on the go. Cotti Coffee was also good as according to my friend, she loved the thick after taste of caffeine. 😀

Eventually, she had to send me to the airport for me to catch my flight home to Johor Bahru, and that should conclude my 4D3N trip to Penang this time.

I have to thank Puan Aishah once again for the hospitality. She has been the one friend who has without fail entertained me every time I am in Penang. Only Allah may repay your kind gestures.

BLOGGING FROM QUEENSBAY MALL, PULAU PINANG

I am now sitting in one spot in Queensbay Mall in Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang - waiting for a friend for lunch.

I arrived a bit too early after checking out from Hotel Seri Malaysia, Kepala Batas. I then took a bus from the bus terminal which was right at the doorsteps of the hotel entrance to Penang Sentral. The original plan was to cross over to island by ferry but there were too many passengers and the next trip would be 1½ hours later. I changed my mind and took a Grab car instead and am now just observing mall goers walking past in front of me.

Will be going to the airport after this to catch my flight home, and should end my trip up north this time.
