TEACHER'S DAY HI-TEA AT PUTERI PACIFIC HOTEL

28th APRIL 2019 ~ The Teacher's Day was celebrated earlier as the original date will be in the fasting month. I could only attend the morning session of the event in school as there was a meeting to attend outside. However, the meeting ended early so I still managed to attend the hi-tea/luncheon at Puteri Pacific Hotel at 2.00 p.m.

We were here too back in 2017 for the same reason.

There was no agenda for the get-together except to get together and eat as much as we could enjoy the buffet spread after school. And many teachers/staff of SMK Dato Jaafar still turned up even we had to pay slightly more for the meal. Teacher's Day is only celebrated once a year so this should be time to enjoy life once in a while.

MINGLING WITH THE DISTRICT'S YOUNG POET WANNABES

27th APRIL 2019 ~ Another competition was held for English at district level. SMK IJ Convent hosted the Poetry Recitation Competition for this year and 21 school took part this time.

There were two sections for this competition - the prepared poem where contestant had to recite a 5-minute poem, and the impromptu session where the students were given the theme on the spot, and they had to prepare the poem in 20 minutes and then recite it on stage.

While waiting for the results, the Convent Choir sang two songs during the intermission: "Heal the World" and "You Raise Me Up" and they sang them beautifully.

The Convent girls emerged as the winners. Unfortunately for my boys, they did not get into the top five places even though the audience seemed to enjoy their recitation and gave them loud applause after both performances. Guess being popular would influence the judges' verdict. I was anyway glad that my students had done well for the competition and they had worked really hard and I still have to congratulate them. Maybe we should try again next time.

ATTENDING PUAN HAJAH MARIAM'S SON'S WEDDING RECEPTION

27th APRIL 2019 ~ Puan Hajah Mariam Shahrom hosted another wedding reception again today and this this time for his son. This was the second reception I attended and it was held in TNB Hall in Kempas. Puan Hajah Mariam once taught in SMK Taman Universiti, most probably in the 90's. She is now teaching in SMK Gelang Patah.

I went right after the Poetry Competition in SMK Convent and was glad to see two other English teachers whom I know. So I had no issue of the need to chat to strangers.

There were no photo of me with the bride and groom as they are not my ex-students.

This should be the VERY last wedding reception attended before the arrival of the month of Ramadhan.

WALKING AWAY FROM JAGALCHI MARKET - PART ONE

23rd MARCH 2019 ~ When I thought leaving Jagalchi Market would be the end of my experience seeing fish and all kinds of sea creatures, the sight was simply never-ending. As I walking away, there were more people selling more things by the road sides and it was endless.

I think Busan people really consume a lot of fish every day, just by looking at the big number of people selling inside and outside Jagalchi Market.

If you wonder why were there so many women running the business at the market area, it would go back to the history of Korea. During the Korean War a long time ago, the men had to go and serve the military. Consequently, the women had to take over the job at the market.

fishcake that could be bought and eaten on the spot

huge octopus

one of the few vegetable stalls

dried squids

offering me something to be eaten/tested

seaweeds

pots and pans

a rare sight to behold at the market

big, fat and juicy strawberries

dried fruits

I wonder if the fish outside would be cheaper than the ones sold inside the main market building.
