YASAKA-JINJA SHRINE IN GION - PART 2

[CONTINUATION OF PART 1]

19TH MARCH 2017 ~ What we basically did was just walking around the place. There seemed to be more to be explored but it was getting late and the surrounding was a bit dark actually. By the way, "jinja" is the Japanese word for "shrine". Now you know.

Here are some interesting facts about Yasaka-Jinja Shrine found on the internet:

1. It is considered as the most popular shrine in Kyoto.

2. It was founded 1350 years ago.

3. Come July, Gion Matsuri is celebrated here at a grand scale. Must come back one day.

4. Each lantern lit up in the main hall (refer to Part 1) contains the name of the company which should contribute donation to the shrine.

I was glad we decided to have a peek inside this place as it turned out to be an important landmark here. Our instinct never went wrong.

YASAKA-JINJA SHRINE IN GION - PART 1

19th MARCH 2017 ~ This was one place we never had any plan to visit. We just saw it there, located at a very busy T-junction with a zebra crossing and people were crossing in a huge number. The place was very bright and many people, including tourists, were walking in and out - so we decided to follow the flow. Furthermore, it was free of charge. ☺

We were greeted with some kind of a food fair where there were rows of stalls selling all kinds of food. It did not have the atmosphere of a shrine/temple at first.

Then only we arrived at the temple/area where there were big orange buildings all around. However, I loved the one with many lanterns hanging from the roof the most.

This should be my very first time visiting a temple at night.

WALKING FROM HIGASHIYAMA TO GION

19th MARCH 2017 ~ It had been one long day for us so it was time to hunt for food for dinner. There would be another long walk to take from the temple to get the halal restaurant. Thanks to the pleasant temperature, we continued wandering along the streets of Higashiyama to Gion.

The place was more laid back, there were not many people on the walkway (thank God for that) and even the streets were busy. (Perhaps it was a Sunday). There were still people wearing kimonos.

Gion is actually a famous district in Kyoto and is known for its traditional wooden houses and Geisha. Too bad we did not have time to explore the place but that should be a valid reason for me to make a comeback one fine day.
