'TIS THE SEASON TO DO BAKING - PART ONE

7th October ~ The baking session was back for the form one students in the set I am teaching. Everyone was very excited to do something real, rather than looking at illustration on paper before they were asked to write essays on process and procedures. Thanks to Puan Suzana Sidek, the Home Science teacher who has been helping me for many years to carry out this lesson.

This year we did some changes to the cupcakes, it used to be vanilla cupcakes with raisins but this year we were making chocolate cupcakes topped with chocolate ganache. 19 girls attended the first slot from 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. while the other half of the class would have to attend the second slot.

Everything went well. They managed to finish the activities on time so that the second group could use the place as planned.

THE LAST CLASS WITH THE FORM THREE STUDENTS

For the third consecutive years, I went to teach a group of form 3 students at Semai Bakti Felda Hostel to prepare them for their PMR examination. This time, I was given 16 boys to coach and to tell you the truth, it was an easy job.

I had done what I should have done for them so I hope that they would get good grades for their English Language paper. I will sure miss (scolding) them and they will also miss me (scolding them) for sure.

INTRODUCING "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" TO ANOTHER BATCH OF STUDENTS

4th October ~ The form one students from set A1 were asked to come to school today. This would be the best time to make them stay and watch this musical which ran for almost 3 hours. I was quite sure this was everybody's first time watching a movie of this genre. The form 2 students had watched "The King and I" a few days back.

Although the movie was quite lengthy, from their response shown by the students, it was obvious that they had enjoyed themselves very much. I hope that they would have a different view towards musicals after this. I really wish one day I could take my students to watch a live English theatre like I used to do when I was in college last time.

VISITING AND OBSERVING MAKSAK CHESS COMPETITION

3rd October ~ Mr. Abdul Aziz asked me to accompany him to New York Hotel to have a look at the MAKSAK [some sort of sports and culture club for government servants] Chess Competition for National level that was in progress. This was like a chance that comes once in a lifetime, not to take part but at least to be able to see matches being played at that level.

We couldn't stay that long - the players' tables were too far away and we could not do any cheering for the team we supported. It would be nice to have a chess competition for schools, for state level as an example, to be done at a hotel like this.

MEETING THE FUTURE JUNIORS AT SK TAMAN UNIVERSITI 1

I started my tour visiting the neighbouring primary school today and it was SK Taman Universiti 1. This was a regular activity for Year 6 students who had finished their UPSR [primary level] examination. The content of the talk should provide some sort of introduction to the life in the secondary school.

Not everybody from this school would be coming to my school next year though as they might be put in other nearby secondary schools. I hope that they had heard my message loud and clear, i.e. if they will not be sent to my school, please do not make any appeal. We have had enough students already. :)

ATTENDING A BRIEFING, ON BEHALF

I attended a briefing to replace someone else (READ: I had no choice) at Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Sri Tebrau delivered by the officers from Johor Bahru District Education Office. It should actually be attended by the principal and the senior assistants of the academic. The briefing was something on the implementation of a new evaluation system which will involve the process of keying in the data online. *sigh*

The representatives from 47 secondary schools of Johor Bahru district were there. The session started at 8:00 a.m. and I was hoping it could end after lunch but we had to continue until 4:00 p.m.

One scary thing about listening to a briefing session is there will extra work to be brought back to school. God please give me strength.
