HAVING NASI KATOK - THE SIGNATURE DISH OF BRUNEI

29th MAY 2023      ~ Your trip to Brunei would not be complete without trying its signature dish - Nasi Katok. One could easily find this rice dish almost everywhere in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Nasi Katok basically was white rice with a piece of fried chicken and "sambal" - ground chili paste. One could choose the "sambal" from the list of different types of "sambal" available. However, there were no vegetables at all. The price for a pack of Nasi Katok was fixed: BND1.50, everywhere nationwide.

We went to get our Nasi Katok at Gadong Uptown, the food court located just beside Gadong Night Market. There were other stalls selling other kinds of food and drinks too. There were not many people at that time so we could easily take photos without being observed by others.

We were happy that we had sampled our very first Nasi Katok. There was not much to complain after paying just BND1.50 for it. I would recommend an innovation for Nasi Katok that is to put a slice or two of cucumber in it. Wonder if that would change the original recipe of the rice.

GADONG NIGHT MARKET - THE FOOD HAVEN OF BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

29th MAY 2023     ~ We were actually not sure where to go to get food for dinner. For one thing, most of the shops and restaurants in the city are closed for business early in the evening. The only suggested place we found from the travel blogs was Gadong Night Market. In order to get there, we took the shuttle bus from the hotel and had to pay BND20 for the trip [which was more expensive than the food prices at the night market].

The night market was operating not in the open air like usual. The stalls were housed under one huge roofed spot which was connected to Gadong Market that was opened for business during the day.

There were many people, mostly locals, who came here for the variety of food available.

The food prices to me were quite cheap. For example, you could still get five pieces of  the "kuih" (sweet desserts) for only BND1.

You could actually buy the food and drinks and have your dinner at the night market. There were tables and benches for visitors at a few spots and that was we did the next evening.

Gadong Night Market is the place for endless gastronomic adventure and the must-visit spot when you are in Bandar Seri Begawan.

ATTENDING THE WEDDING OF ANOTHER EX-STUDENT, MS. SHAANMATHI

I attended the wedding reception of another ex-student of SMK Taman Universiti, Ms. Shaanmathi. The event was held at the bride's house in Taman Universiti.

I could not find any familiar faces around the place and couldn't stay that long as well.

Thanks Shaanmathi for inviting me. Congratulations and may the years ahead be filled with lasting joy.
