JUDGING JOHOR BAHRU DISTRICT MARCHING COMPETITION - DAY 1

SMKTUN's Scouts in action

closing ceremony

Another year of judging the marching competition. This time, it was the non-government organization (NGO) category. Luckily there were only 5 teams taking part so it ended quite early. The boy Scouts from SMK Taman Universiti managed to secure the third place so congratulations to all of them.

Tomorrow will be the girls' turn and it seems there will be more teams participating. Hopefully I can take more photographs (of myself) and the teams from my school.

BRUNEI TRIP: THE EMPIRE HOTEL AND COUNTRY CLUB - THE INTERIOR

the big windows overlooking the ocean

my first time taking self-photograph in front of a mirror ~ no choice!

I was told by the taxi driver cum tourist guide that Michael Jackson once stayed here. So when I was informed that I could actually walk around in the hotel lobby, I was kind of unsure of what I would encounter. Once I was inside, I realized that this was the place that was definitely not for me - there was this guilty feeling to be there. Talking about low self esteem. Thus, I spent only a short moment there for the fear of trespassing into unknown territory. Words that came across my mind of people whom I saw there: FILTHY RICH.

BRUNEI TRIP: THE EMPIRE HOTEL AND COUNTRY CLUB - THE APARTMENTS

The Empire Hotel is a 6-star hotel in Bandar Sri Begawan, which was included in the itinerary of my visit to Brunei. This is the scene taken from the hotel exterior, focusing on the apartments which look luxurious to me. Wait for the next posting which will consist photos around the hotel lobby.

ENGLISH WORKSHOP FOR FORM 2 AT SMK DESA SKUDAI

This was one programme specially done for the form two students, talking about long term planning. So I was invited to conduct a 2-hour session for the form 2 students, but not from the high-achievers group. I was reluctant at first but the old friend, Mr. Ahmad Zaki kept persuading so I opted for a Sunday morning slot. I was happy enough the participants paid attention and followed the writing activities right until the end. I need to carry out similar programme for my school.

JOHOR BAHRU MSSM CHESS COMPETITION 2011

The chess competition for Johor Bahru district was carried out today at SMK Bandar Baru Uda. The regulation this year only allowed 4 representatives for each category [boys and girls, under 15 and 18 years age]. This year, we had to work harder as there were fewer committee members on duty because the competition for primary level was also done on the same day. It was really a busy day, so I couldn't really take many photographs. Furthermore, I didn't want to make it too obvious as I was appointed one of the arbiters.

At the end of the day, Boo Zhan Hui won the second place for under 18 category and will be representing Johor Bahru district for the state level competition next week. Congratulations to him and the other team members as well. We have to work harder because this year's achievement was not as good as previous years' and I might need to see some of you for further discussion on how to improve our chess team.

A FAREWELL GATHERING AND A DEBATE

FAREWELL GATHERING

This was a farewell gathering for three non-academic staff who would be going away to other school. As it was held in the morning, I had to go to school earlier. We had the usual programme of speeches, prize-giving ceremony and then, last but not least, the feast.

DEBATE

I was appointed as one of the judges of the quarter-final round of the inter-school English debate of Johor Bahru district. I am no longer involved in this debate thing but past experience did help a bit to judge. The competition I had to observe was between SMK Sultan Ismail and SMK Sri Rahmat, and luckily it was not difficult to choose the winner. I hope that I would not be chosen as a judge for debate again as it was a bit stressful to listen and then deliberate on your verdict.
