AN IMPROMPTU SUPPER SESSION PAST MIDNIGHT

10TH APRIL 2022 ~ This was an impromptu supper session after attending the funeral of an ex-colleague [of SMK Taman Universiti] at 11:00 p.m. in Taman Impian Emas. My friends and I decided to stop by at a restaurant in Taman Sri Skudai before going home. It was just a short sit in session as the next day would be a working day for everyone.

It must have been a very long time for me to hang out with friends after midnight. I must have got very old by now.

One thing for sure, there will always be one less group member joining us when we have our gathering in the future. 😭

THE BIG BREAKFAST SESSION ONE DAY BEFORE RAMADAN

1st APRIL 2022 ~ The last activity before the arrival of Ramadan the very next day was to have big breakfast Johor style and again, the morning gastronomic adventure involved going places hunting for local food available.

The first pit stop was the food court at Hutan Bandar. Puan Suhaila seemed to have an addiction to the Lotong Kering sold here and this would be the third time coming here just to buy the dish to be taken away and eaten later in Shah Alam. This place would always be crowded during weekends and finding seats could already be a challenge.

As for me, I saw this stall selling Mee Kolok the last I came here and I decided to join the queue for the noodles originated from Sarawak. The queue got longer after I got my order.

And I love the Roti Jala sold at this place too.

Once we got all the food that we wanted, we drove off to the next pit stop: Selera Johor, planning for another dine in breakfast session there. 

Unfortunately there were no empty seats in sight when we arrived. People must have come here for breakfast that morning after going to the market for the preparation of Ramadan. So the only place I could suggest to my guests was the food court at the Larkin Market which was opposite Selera Johor, just within a short walking distance. I was hoping that the place was good enough for the visitors.

We were actually a bit late for breakfast as some food was already sold out. Nevertheless, we managed to pool different dishes from different stalls on the table - fried rice, Murtabak, Puri, Idli and Java Sate.

And I saw someone smiling behind the face mask while walking towards my table. Reunion happened everywhere. This time with Mr. Hilmi - an ex-students of SMK Kempas who used to be in my English tuition classes when he was in Form 3 and 5.

I was happy because I found a new eating place to take other friends for breakfast when they come visiting.

That was the concluding session of the gastronomic adventure right before we started fasting the very next day. I am looking forward to more exciting gastronomic adventures with Mr. Ridwan Wahid and his family soon.

ONE TOURIST GUIDE AND THREE TOURISTS EXPLORING THE CITY

1ST APRIL 2022 ~ As we had had dinner earlier [READ HERE], the next itinerary that evening was to explore the city tourist style - as if there were many places we could go. The main attraction would definitely be the crown in front of Istana Bukit Serene [translate: Serene Hill Palace] - the landmark for the been-there-done-that kind of thing. This place was empty many weeks ago but now, as we are in the transition period, there were already people visiting the site to enjoy the view and to take photos.

Even though Mr. Ridwan Wahid and his family had been to Johor Bahru many times, this should be their very first visit to the current prominent landmark of the city.

The next place I planned to take them was the city centre where Segget River that flowed through the commercial centre which was once very dirty and smelly, had already been an attraction to locals and visitors alike. Unfortunately, the bad traffic congestion had made us cancelled our plan and diverted to the newest McD outlet in town for coffee/tea/hot chocolate, the one near Taman Tasek.

To get a table at the restaurant was already a challenge. We had to wait and watched fiercely for empty seats.

When I thought that was the concluding activity of the day, then someone wanted to get coconut water - one hour before midnight! The nearest place I could think of was Bandar Baru Uda which accommodated many restaurants that should still be operating at 11:00 p.m.

We found this Restoran Osman and the place was jam packed with people despite the fact that they should already be in beds. I would have to find out what was so special about this restaurant that attracted many people until late at night.

Having coconut water before the clock struck twelve would be something to remember for many more years to come. It was time to say goodbye - before we met again for the breakfast session Johor style the next morning.

PRE-RAMADAN GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE WITH FRIENDS FROM SHAH ALAM

 

1ST APRIL 2022 ~ Mr. Ridwan Abd. Wahid, a friend of UPM TESL class of 1993, with his wife and daughter, were back in town. I had the chance to play tourist guide again and the eating place chosen for our early dinner was ZZ Sup Tulang which I had not taken them there before.

Foods on the table were aplenty - rice, noodles, soup, and even egg banjo, and that should be something to savour before the Ramadan arrived in two days when Muslims would have to fast. They had traveled all the way from Shah Alam so the gastronomic rendezvous should worth the time and effort.

I guess they must have enjoyed their dinner but my job as a tourist guide would be continued a few hours after that.
