MOVIE REVIEW - "LES MISERABLES"

"Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!"

I just had to go watch this movie after all the hard work that I had done before the registration day and the first day of school, before I have to continue with other endless list of tasks to be completed.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to write the synopsis of the movie. The characters were all French and I could not even spell them correctly. The plot was a bit complicated, moving from one setting to another within a long span of time. That didn't matter as the three main actors, Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe and Anne Hathaway, displayed superb performance as if I was watching a live theatre show. The scene that had made me to believe that everything was real and not acting was when Fantine (Anne Hathaway) was singing "I Dreamed a Dream" after she was forced into prostitution - I will not be surprised if she will be nominated for the Academy Award for that. I would give the movie a standing ovation and then shout "encore, encore" while clapping my hands until my palms turn red.

For the plot of the movie, which was a blend of romance and actions set against the era of French Revolution, click here.

We are so used to seeing Hugh Jackman and Russel Crowe playing the roles of other prominent characters like Wolverine and Gladiator, I found this very funny review posted on a friend's FB wall.

It was a good start for the year 2013 and I am looking forward to a few more movies coming after this. However, I do hope that I will have the chance to watch a real theatre (the last time I did that was like trillion years ago) and perhaps I need to cross over to the neighbouring country, Singapore, to do just that. Any follower?

And to conclude, here's a video of Susan Boyle singing one of the songs from the musical in her audition for "Britains Got Talent". Enjoy!

*NOTE to Mr. Amin Ahmad: It was a surprise that you enjoyed watching a musical like this too :)

MOVIE REVIEW - "WRECK-IT RALPH"

This is a movie review which is long overdue. I watched this movie with Mr. Syazwan to kill time while waiting for the 11 p.m. train to take us back to JB.

The animation movie was about the characters in the video game arcades so I could recognize most of them except Pacman. Ralph, whose job was to destroy building, got bored of his life as people looked down on him for being a bad guy. So he tried hard to please other people but he was still not appreciated. Even though he was doing a good deed, he was still hated and everything seemed to go against him. And seriously, I could not remember what actually happened but I was that he was happy that he could do things that he should be doing.

If you had the experience playing video games then I think you would enjoy watching this. There should be a lesson that you can learn at the end of the viewing session. *yawn*

TEMPLE STREET MARKET, HONG KONG

2nd December 2012 ~ After a day spent at Macau, we went to the last night market that was called Temple Street Market. Actually we found this one by accident after asking for directions from a local. There was one before the Temple Street Market, and after that, the market seemed to extend to another one more market.

Basically the items on sale were almost the same with what we saw in Ladies Market, and even in Shenzen. The basic skills of haggling are required - haggle till you drop. However, here I met one very friendly stall owner who kept laughing all the way through the bargaining process after I uttered a few Mandarin words. I think they were impressed if a foreigner could speak in their mother tongue but the danger of it would be they would be responding with lengthy sentences in Cantonese as if you could understand everything.

taking a short break Hongkongese style
Surprisingly, the row of stalls along the roads seemed to be endless and we got we were looking for to bring home. Your stay in Hong Kong will not be complete without visiting its night markets.
waiting for the train to the hotel
Hong Kong could be a good place for people to shop but I was not there to do that. Just by walking and observing the night market could be something enjoyable and this has been one of the major tourists' attractions of the city.

THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR 2013

Wednesday, 2nd January ~ The school session for the year 2013 started today. Alhamdulillah (Thank God) for the bright sunny weather which had enabled us to manage the remove, form one and two students, which should be more than 1100 people, before they were sent into their respective classrooms. There were also very few new students who came to register today so there was not much stress on the first day of work.

For the remove and form one students, the Orientation Week started today. Nevertheless, it started to rain after 5 o'clock so we had to modify the timetable so at least half of the students could still listen to the briefing given in the school hall and library.

It was a wet evening when the school was dismissed but it was a great first day of school for everybody. One day had gone, and many many more days to come.

"It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me,
and I'm feeling good."
