CAMBODIAN CULTURAL VILLAGE - PART 4

From the Chinese Village section of the Cambodian Cultural Village, we then walked to the next station called Kola Village. It was an open air theatre and I guess there would be no performance if it rains. Again, the seats were already occupied so we opted sitting on the ground but this time with more people doing the same thing. The audience were presented with a dance drama in Cambodian language. The whole thing involved the villagers dancing, a pair of peacocks and snakes, people went hunting and finally a beautiful girl from the audience was chosen to take part in the theatre. By the way the title of the show was "Dreamy Prince's Daughter and Magic Peacock".

There was also a character playing a comic relief but he was one of the leading actors in the story I supposed as he appeared in many of the scenes.

Here is another video recording of the dance presented at Kola Village specially for you.

Finally, we went to this place called Kroeung Village to watch another show called "Choosing Fiance". The whole thing was humourous but some of the jokes (by watching the actions of the actors) would not be suitable for young kids. At one time, a young Japanese (or Korean) man was asked to take part in the drama and he had to (or was force to) take off his shirt to be one of the characters in the story.

We had to leave the cultural village as Mr. Safy, our tuk tuk driver, would be waiting for us outside at 6:00 p.m. There was another show called Drum of Success Dancing at Khmer Village but we had to make a move.

In conclusion, the Cambodian Cultural Village is the place you should visit it you like to learn the tradition and culture of the Cambodian people. We had to pay USD15 to get in there but it was worth the money spent. We were there at about 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. but the place opens every day at 11:00 a.m. Make sure you refer closely to the programme in the leaflet provided so that you will not miss any show.

CAMBODIAN CULTURAL VILLAGE - PART 3

After the wedding ceremony, we rushed to another venue called the Chinese Village for another show which should start in about 15 minutes. Again, the seats were full so we had to settle for the back row that received direct afternoon sunlight.

There could be Chinese community here in Cambodia, like any other places in the world. So there were performances like lion and fan dance. The main attractions however were the acrobatic shows with dangerous and impossible stunts being done for the audience.

All in all, we had a lot fun watching the show so it was worth the time sitting under the hot Cambodian sun.

Here is the Fan Dance recorded for your viewing pleasure.

CAMBODIAN CULTURAL VILLAGE - PART 2

12th MARCH 2016 ~ From the Mini Theatre, there was about a 15-minute break before another show started. We walked to a house called "Millionaire House", a big building built on high stilts. When arrived there were already many people waiting to watch the Khmer wedding ceremony and we could not get a seat. Lucky enough, the was still space between the stage and the front row of the audience so I happily sat on the floor.

Two people from the audience were invited to go on stage to participate in the joyous event. An interactive kind of thing.

The whole ceremony looked so real and natural. It was not only very informative but also entertaining, even though everything was done in Cambodian language. Just imagine the actors and actresses, how lucky they are to be able to get married almost every day.

The advantage of sitting right of the stage, nearest to the performers, was that I could see everything very clearly. There was this person who played the character of a comic relief and he was staring right into my camera while I was recording the show. Make sure you watch the Youtube video of the wedding ceremony.

CAMBODIAN CULTURAL VILLAGE - PART ONE

12th MARCH 2016 ~ We were already on the road of Siem Reap 30 minutes after checking in at the hotel. Mr. Safy, our tuk tuk driver cum tour guide, took us to the Cambodian Cultural Village. The place was quite big and the weather was quite hot, much hotter than Malaysia - so walking around should not be a good thing to do at that time.

Other than looking around, other major activities here would be watching various cultural performances available. We were just at the right time to catch a show called "Charming of Phahum" at the (open) Mini Theatre.

Basically it was a dance drama which integrated both traditional and contemporary dances. From my interpretation, the story was about a couple who fell in love but the girl's parents were against the marriage plan as they had their own candidate.

Despite the fact there were many foreign tourists in the audience, everyone seemed to be entertained by the show. Music and dance knew no barriers.

And here is a short recording of one of the dances performed at the theatre.
