DRIVING OUT OF THE 10KM PARAMETER TO GET THE SNAKESKIN FRUIT

I drove out of the 10 kilometre boundary to Taman Mutiara Rini today to get the snakeskin fruit from the husband-and-wife ex-colleagues[of SMK Taman Universiti], Mr. Hisham Abdullah and Puan Nor Hafizah. I was invited inside the house which is a common courtesy gesture and it would be inappropriate to say "no". A few minutes later, two more people arrived, the recently wedded couple, Mr. Reynullah and Pn. Wan Nor Azrin, to share the food served by the hosts.

I just miss the moment when we can simply our friends a visit and gossip over coffee - without being worried people would find out you have done something taboo during the pandemic. Let's just pray that things will get better real soon so we could have our old lives back.

THE MORNING MARKET AT JALAN SETIA BUDI, MEDAN

30TH JANUARY 2017 ~ Before we pushed off to Lake Toba, we managed to visit the morning market near the hotel at Jalan Setia Budi. I always find it informative and entertaining to visit a local market where I can mingle with the community. At the same time, I could see whether there is anything that I could buy to bring back home.

It was another typical morning market where people came to get their daily stock of fish, vegetables and fruits. There was nothing peculiar here, like what I had seen in Indochina. It had probably rained the night before as the road was slightly wet and muddy.

I bought two blocks of the squarish "tempe" home

local "kuih" (sweet cakes) for breakfast

this was before going back on the last day

I managed to get original Indonesian "tempe" (fermented soy cake), snake skin fruits ("buah salak") and raw "belinjau" crackers from the market before leaving Medan on the last day.
