THE BREAKFAST SESSION THAT TOOK PLACE AT KEROPOK LEKOR BAWANG GHANI BLACK IN KUANTAN

16TH SEPTEMBER 2025    ~ We were here the day before to buy Keropok Lekor Bawang at Ghani Black shop [READ HERE] but it was sold out. Puan Aunillah Hilmi booked for a new batch of freshly made keropok and would come and pick up the next day. When we arrived at this place at about 9:15 a.m., the order was not ready yet. Luckily, the food stall next too it was already operating and we decided to get our breakfast.

I had had my breakfast  earlier at the hotel so I just ate the Karipap [Curry Puffs] and Fried Keropok Lekor.

By the time we finished our breakfast, the Keropok Lekor Bawang was ready for pick up and we were about to start our excursion to Sungai Lembing.

HUNTING FOR KEROPOK LEKOR BAWANG GHANI BLACK IN KUANTAN

15TH SEPTEMBER 2025    ~ On our way back to Kuantan from Pekan, we stopped by at these stalls named Keropok Lekor Ghani Black. The reason: I wanted to buy Keropok Lekor Bawang to bring back home.

There was already a large crowd at that place, with a lot cars already parked by the roadside. The reason: one week school holiday and long weekends for the nation because of double public holidays on Monday and Tuesday. Consequently, the Keropok Lekor I wanted to buy was out of stock and we had to come in the morning the next day. Guess everyone was hunting for the same thing.

"Keropok lekor is a traditional Malay fish cracker snack originating from the state of Terengganu, Malaysia. It is made from fish and sago flour and seasoned with salt and sugar. It is slightly greyish and gives off a fishy taste and smell which becomes more prominent as it cools down after frying."

My two friends ended up buying the food items and most of them were still hot from the big pan.

One thing for sure, I would be coming back again to this place the next day, early in the morning for my Keropok Lekor.

ALL IN A DAY'S WORK - PART 3

FAQ:
Now that you have already retired, what do you do at home?

ANSWER:

Once in a while, I go out for Teh Tarik [Tea + Milk] and Fried Banana session like other locals do. However today, I opted for Fried Sweet Potato, Fried Tempe [fermented soy] and Fried Keropok Lekor [fish fingers, the traditional version]. And we had Nescafe instead of tea.

Looking at the number of visitors at about 5:00 p.m., this place was sure one famous spot in the area of Kampung Melayu Majidee.

This time, I introduced Mr. Eko, my assistant gardener, to another regular place I used to visit for tea in the afternoon called Pisang Goreng Rimbun Cherry.

Believe me, there are other place for me to take Mr. Eko, who has now become more of a friend, to enjoy all the food.

THE COURIER TRUCK STOPPED BY AGAIN

The excitement escalated when the courier truck stopped in front of the house and I was informed by a dear friend I should be expecting a parcel from her.

The styrofoam container was filled with frozen keropok lekor [kneaded fish and flour, something like fish cake, raw and needs to be fried] and it had traveled all the way from Kuantan, or somewhere from the East Coast to Johor Bahru.

Thanks a lot Puan Suriana Ali, a friend of UPM TESL class of 1993, for your kind thought. I could actually get this keropok lekor here but I am sure the one sincerely sent by a far away friend would definitely taste much better.

MY WEEKEND'S BIG BREAKFAST OUTSIDE

I rarely have breakfast outside but today it was a big one and was accompanied by a friend/colleague after the plan to get supper the night before was cancelled.

We decided to meet up at Selera Johor Food Court and I was glad to introduce this place to Mr. Wan Mohd, Nazri.

There were not many people eating there and we were among the early birds. We just had the usual Mee Rebus Johor (with meat balls), Teh Tarik and Keropok Lekor for the first round.

The heavy breakfast was then complemented by Chocolaty Avocado drinks and beef sate.

This should be one of the heaviest breakfasts I had ever had and I just prayed I would not grow fat overnight. It was good though to sometimes enjoy hefty food for breakfast once in a while and it was quite an achievement to eat all that during the 2-hour breakfast session. I should be more adventurous to either try other food or visit other eating place in the next gastronomic adventure: breakfast edition.

MY MERSING GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE - ENJOYING "KEROPOK LEKOR" BY THE SEASIDE

29th OCTOBER 2018 ~ When in Mersing, it is a must to eat "Keropok Lekor" [fish sausage made of fish and sago flour, cut and then fried in hot oil] in the afternoon for tea. Thanks to Mr. Muhammad Farimie, an ex-student of SMK Taman Universiti SPM batch 2012 who contacted me to take me out after the course session ended. He is now working and residing in the small town. It was kind and thoughtful of him to meet after work.

We went to this place by the ocean behind Seri Malaysia Hotel. There were many people who were eating there, mostly youngsters. That would be a very good place for people to hang out - eating, and chit-chatting while enjoying the scenery.

I requested to be taken to the new landmark in Mersing: the Flinstones Castle. I was happy enough to get to be there outside the gate for a short while.

Well, I met him again the night after for dinner and to get reunited with another ex-student of mine.
