SABAH TRADITIONAL HOUSES IN HERITAGE VILLAGE AT SABAH MUSEUM

26th FEBRUARY 2023  ~ The last section of Sabah Museum was the Heritage Village where the traditional houses of Sabah were built for people to visit.

There were many houses which belonged to the various ethnic groups of Sabah.

Unfortunately, I found that the place was not in a good condition as it was not well taken care of. Most of the houses needed some kind of cleaning job as it looked abandoned and unattractive.

A few houses were locked and therefore visitors could just observe the building from outside.

The occupants of the few of the houses were people selling their handicrafts and they were not friendly enough to approach visitors.

The museum authority has to do something about upgrading the house exhibits in the Heritage Village. Malaysians always have problems with maintaining the existing facilities after spending a lot of money building and developing them.

It was still an educational visit but if I were to make a comeback to Kota Kinabalu, I would make it a point to visit Mari Mari Village for a better experience.

VISITING THE TRADITIONAL HOUSES AT THE CULTURAL VILLAGE - PART 1

the visitors were already waiting outside
the host [in blue] just came back
from attending the assembly :)

THE CHINESE HOUSE

6TH SEPTEMBER 2022  ~ After waiting for about 20 minutes we made our move to visit the first traditional house: the Chinese house.

For every house, there would be someone who should be the host, giving information not only about the house but also the lifestyle of the people who stayed there many, many years ago with some historical background.

There were also items of the past on display that were something that I was familiar with. Too bad, I must too old already by now. :)

THE MALAY HOUSE

The Malay house in the Cultural Village had a lot of resemblance to the Malay houses Peninsular Malaysia.

In a few of the houses, there were women carrying out cooking demonstration of the local delicacies that were made by people who stay there. Visitors could also buy these food items which were put on sale straight from the pan, literally.

THE MELANAU HOUSE

In Melanau house, there was dancing activity going on. Bamboos were used in the dance and dancers had to move in sync to the beat of the drum and at the same time, they had to make sure their feet would be trapped by the bamboos.

Someone was daring enough to try the dance at the Melanau House to entertain the other guests.

Tarian Alu Alu was actually performed before a funeral in the Melanau community. I wonder whether they are still practising this now.

There were many more houses to be visited before we had to go to the auditorium for the cultural show.
