STOPPING BY AT THE NIGHT MARKET IN THE HEART OF KUANTAN CITY

26th JANUARY 2026    ~ After another heavy dinner in Kuantan, we decided to stop by at one night market located in the heart of the city. To be exact, the place was called "Taman Kerang" if I am not mistaken.

We were there after 10:00 p.m. and there were still stalls operating but with less people walking around. The last time I came here two years ago was to get my food for dinner. [READ HERE]

It was good in a way as I believe the slow walk helped the food in the tummy to be digested before bed time.

My friends sure had things to buy from there but I did not find anything attractive to get from the bazaar.

EXPLORING MAHARANI UPTOWN IN THE HEART OF MUAR TOWN

6TH SEPTEMBER 2025    ~ As I had nothing else to do that evening, I decided to walk to the night market, now relabelled as Uptown Maharani 300 metres away from the hotel [according to the hotel receptionist].

I might have arrived too early, which was past 8:00 p.m., as there were not many people around.

I did not buy anything from here as I did find anything fancy. But it was good to exercise after eating the rice at the wedding reception and eating the same thing again for dinner [as the guests were given packed food giveaway before leaving].

THE NIGHT MARKET IN BAYAN LEPAS REVISITED

17th MAY 2025    ~ After attending the wedding in Sungai Petani, Kedah, [READ HERE] I had to cross over to Penang as I need to catch my flight home from Penang Airport. As usual, I had a stopover at a friend's house in Bayan Lepas. With a few hours more to kill, Puan Aishah Aboo Bakar and her husband decided to visit the Pasar Malam [translate: Night Market] near their house in Jalan Mahkamah.

This was my second time here at the Pasar Malam. The first time I visited this weekly market was back in 2023. [READ HERE]

As for the lovely husband-and-wife couple, they had not been at this place for many years and they made a comeback as there was a visitor and they had to play hosts. 😀

Even though Penang is always flocked by tourists all year long, this place was not an attraction to them. I think I was the only [local] tourist at that time who was busy taking photos.

[much] cheaper than at home

fried/salted seafood products

There were so many things on sale and the temptation to buy the food items was hard to resist. We ended up buying a variety of delicacies from the stalls for dinner to bring home.

Thanks again to Puan Aishah [a friend of UPM TESL Class of 1993] and Mr. Arif for the short trip to Pasar Malam. We should do this again, perhaps at other venues in Penang when I make a return trip in the future.

THE GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE AT ASEAN NIGHT BAZAAR, HATYAI

23RD NOVEMBER 2024    ~ On the last night in Hatyai, we went to ASEAN Night Bazaar. We actually walked from Central Hatyai Mall for about 10-15 minutes.

The bazaar was actually another night market which Hatyai was famous for except the stalls were located under one roof and in a permanent structure. On the ground floor, there were stalls selling mostly souvenir items for tourists.

On the second floor was where the gastronomic adventure happened. There were many food stalls selling all kinds of food and I found it difficult to make up my mind of what to eat. The very first challenge was to find vacant seats to dine in at the food court.

The food sold in this area was halal, and this was another popular place among Malaysian tourists.

By the second night in Southern Thailand, we had savoured enough street food and seafood already. And we still had one more day left to enjoy Thai food.
