THE MEETING THAT TOOK PLACE AT KFC

The regular teacher friends who are involved in school chess activities had a meeting in Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant tonight at Taman Perling. This place is also our regular annual meeting place, especially before the district level competitions start.

The serious discussion was on to revive the Tanjung Puteri Chess Club for 2026, by planning some activities for the members, both teachers and students. Hope we could make people become more interested to play chess, either for fun or competitions.

MEETING MORE EX-STUDENTS CUM EX-ANGKLUNG PLAYERS

23rd JUNE 2015 ~ Once in a blue moon, I got to see girls ex-students over coffee,or heavier meals. When Ms. Hariani asked me on Facebook whether I was free to meet up, with another ex-student, Ms. Nurul Izzati Zakaria, I did not hesitate to say "Yes". So we went to Plaza Kotaraya for a late lunch/tea/early dinner with a lot of catching up to do.

Both of them are from SPM batch 2008 so the conversation was basically about the good old time in SMK Taman Universiti, all the things in the past and present. Both of them played angklung before and Izati was also the school chess player. Surprisingly there was a lot to gossip so I am looking forward to another session some other time.

Thank you girls for the time. We should have the all-girls Angklung Group reunion one day.

ANNUAL CHESS CLUB END-OF-YEAR PARTY AT KFC

10th October ~ The annual Chess Club party was held today at our favourite spot, i.e. KFC Taman Universiti. Initially I could not join in the fun as I had another school function to attend on Friday morning (what?) but the event ended earlier so I still had the time to go before the Friday prayer.

It was good to see familiar faces of people whom you knew well. 10 committee members and 2 teacher advisers of SMKTUN Chess Club were there having their meals when I arrived but a few went people went missing right after that.

So this was the reason for their disappearance - running to the Aeon Shopping Mall just across the street to buy a cake and a present. [*NOTE: old people (like me) do not celebrate birthday anymore, especially in a public place, as it might cause embarrassment - unless you insist]

Thanks to everyone for inviting, and thanks also for the birthday celebration. I do not know I will still be involved in chess activities in the future, but perhaps I will just get busy for the district and state level management.

This is something which I should have done much earlier but there was no appropriate time. This is the video produced by the Chess Club members and the school chess players, the present and the past, to thank me when I had to leave for my new work place.

What I could say is I was there just to supervise but it was all your hard-work, commitment and determination that had made everything possible. It was easy working with you all as you were a group of people who could organize things on your own and you had made the group mobilized. SMK Taman Universiti has been recognized as a strong contender for every district level chess competitions and have produced many players for state level tournaments. And I hope this will continue even though I am no longer around in school. Good luck SMKTUN Chess Club!

REMNANT OF THE PAST - PART 2

21st August 2014 ~ Photos taken with the students of my Form One and Two English class of Set A1, and the committee members of the Chess Club on my last day in SMK Taman Universiti.

P.S. Do you miss me as much as I miss you? *sigh*

CHESS RANKING MATCH IN SCHOOL

The school Chess Club held its second annual event this year which was the Ranking Match. The participation was encouraging even though the competition was held on Sunday.

CHESS COMPETITION IN SCHOOL

Sunday, 13th January 2013 ~ The chess competition was organized by the school's Chess Club at the school hall. It was only the second week of school session which was quite early actually but then we had not much choice. One reason is the district level competition will be held very soon, before the Chinese New Year. At the same time, we are desperately trying to get new chess players for the school.

Students' participation was not that good, in fact the least number of participants in the history so far. I would worry as this was not a good sign. The number of chess players seemed to be decreasing each year despite the effort that had been put, such as by having Chess Clinic last year.

The committee members have now to think of ways on how to attract more people to play chess in school. But we will have to prepare for the upcoming MSSD tournament first.

CHESS CLUB FAREWELL GATHERING FOR MISS QUEK

When I was informed that Miss Quek Miow Leng's transfer back to Batu Pahat was approved, I knew that one of the most affected groups would be the school's Chess Club. Her dedication and commitment in carrying out her duty as the teacher adviser of the club and also as one of the teachers for the Chess Team were something not many people would be able to do.

Nevertheless, life has to go on. To appreciate for all what she had done, the committee members decided to throw a small party for her when she agreed to come all the way from Batu Pahat.

As usual, the gathering was held at KFC Taman Universiti. (Sorry guys, I do not go to AEON Taman Universiti) Puan Ruhanah Md. Son, accompanied by her daughter, and Puan Rafidah Abdul Samat, together with her husband and two kids, were also there.

At the same time, this was also the end of year party that was done for the fifth former committee members who will be leaving school. (read: 2-in-1)

Thanks again Miss Quek. The Chess Club will sure miss you a lot.

THE FIRST CHESS CLINIC IN SCHOOL

WHITE: Will you eat the black Queen using your Rook?

The first Chess Clinic was held in school today. It was organized with the objective of preparing the new players for the upcoming chess competitions under the supervision of a chess expert. We were lucky as we managed to get Mr. Leong to come over to school and coach the chess players from 8:00 in the morning until 4:00.

Congratulations to the teacher adviser of the Chess Club, Miss Quek Miow Leng, as well as the committee members, who had worked hard to finally carry out this programme. [We had been planning this a few years back actually] Hopefully we can have another session with Mr. Leong before the real competition at district level in April.
