THE SUPPER SESSION THAT TOOK PLACE AT KFC STULANG LUAT

23rd APRIL 2026    ~  The main reason why we wanted to have supper at this particular KFC restaurant in Stulang Laut was because of its strategic location. It was situated right by the sea, Selat Tebrau [TRANSLATE: straits] to be exact. I myself, a local of the city, had never set foot at this eating place. When Mr. Norazman who was here [from Kuala Lumpur] for work wanted to go there, I agreed without any hesitation.

The indoor eating area was spacious and the were two levels. Diners also had the option to enjoy the food outside. Originally we wanted to stay outdoor as this would be a unique experience.

EXPECTATION: it would be a memorable date, sitting and enjoying the food, while admiring the scenic view of the lights from Singapore in the background with the sound of the waves running to the beach.

REALITY: There was this unpleasant smell that could be caused by the stagnant water which would make eating outdoor impossible. Nevertheless, we could still see people staying in the dining area outside despite the terrible odour.

We quickly ran inside with our food and enjoyed our supper in an air-conditioned dining area which was much more comfortable.

By now, we already knew what to expect if we were to go there again some other time in the future. At least, we don't have to compete with other people find empty seats outside.

MY HOMETOWN GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE: DINNER/SUPPER AT McD

A dinner/supper date was set with Mr. Norazman before going back to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. The most convenient venue was McDonald's restaurant at Stulang Laut, which was near to his homestay. I could not remember when was the last time I ate in a McD restaurant.

The last time I ate at this particular outlet was 6 years ago, with a good friend who had passed away [READ HERE].

This McD outlet should be a popular one as the dining area was full and finding a parking spot could be a challenge. One even had to pay a parking fee to get into the place.

Thanks to Mr. Norazman for his time and company. Hope to see him again when he is back in town for work or when I travel up north to Kuala Lumpur.

INTRODUCING PASAR KARAT AND STULANG LAUT TO A VISITOR

25th MAY 2023    ~ The next tourist spot in Johor Bahru my friend from Labuan had to visit was Pasar Karat. Do not be surprised this should be the tourist guide first visit to this place. Guess I had to thank the tourist or else I would not be here.

How would I describe Pasar Karat? It was another night market that one could spend time at up until late at night. If you have visitors, this place could be an option and one could buy something to take home from here. However, we didn't buy anything.

The last spot visited was Stulang Laut. The reason: to see the night view of Singapore just across the Strait of Johor.

Those were the activities for my friend that I managed to plan for my friend for the day. Glad that he had quickly recovered as he was not feeling well in the afternoon so we could be at the city centre.

SIPPING COFFEE IN A RESTAURANT BY THE BEACH [ACROSS THE ROAD]

The best time to meet a friend/an ex-colleague would be during the school holiday during a weekday when others were are working. I decided to meet up with Mr. Tukiman Sarmin at a McDonald's outlet in Stulang Laut and it was my first time there.

We were told by staff (on guard) at the entrance that we could only spend 30 minutes in the restaurant. She was eyeing the customers in the dining hall which I felt was not necessary and it made me feel that I could not enjoy my meeting there even though the place was cold and comfortable.

Once we had finished our cakes and coffee, we decided to walk to the nearby [small] beach just across the road and chatted a bit more. That should be some sort of a walk-along-the-beach-during-the-school-holiday moment for me.

Next time, we would have to find a place where we could spend more time without anyone watching and expecting us to finish off our food and begone.

MEETING ANOTHER TWO (OLD) FRIENDS FROM KUALA LUMPUR

Two old friends from UPM were in JB today and I had a date with both at them at the same time as they are married to each other. They were in Johor Premium Outlet (JPO) during the day and decided to put up a night here and will be back in JPO again tomorrow.

So we met up at this one eating place in Stulang Laut but the session ended quite early so we went to my favourite food stalls in Kampung Melayu.

Unfortunately we arrived at the place a bit too late and the famous Murtabak Kampung Melayu had already sold out. I guess we have to make a comeback some other time in the future.

Thanks Mr. Ismaznizam and Puan Hazlina for the brief rendezvous. I hope you both will enjoy your shopping trip and your short stay here in JB.
