INTRODUCING "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" TO ANOTHER BATCH OF STUDENTS

4th October ~ The form one students from set A1 were asked to come to school today. This would be the best time to make them stay and watch this musical which ran for almost 3 hours. I was quite sure this was everybody's first time watching a movie of this genre. The form 2 students had watched "The King and I" a few days back.

Although the movie was quite lengthy, from their response shown by the students, it was obvious that they had enjoyed themselves very much. I hope that they would have a different view towards musicals after this. I really wish one day I could take my students to watch a live English theatre like I used to do when I was in college last time.

INTRODUCING "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" TO 1KP1 [2011 BATCH]

The form three students are going to sit for their PMR exam this week and as a consequence, the school can only accommodate a few classes in one day as the classrooms, desks and chairs will be used throughout the session. As usual, I asked my form one students to come to school today so I could introduce them to the one movie I never get tired watching "The Sound of Music".

The viewing was done in the Computer Lab and I was glad there was a pair of new speakers and a woofer which made watching the movie a cineplex kind of experience.

I hope that the students who came to watch the classic film had loved the movie and enjoyed themselves. I asked them to comment and how they like or dislike the movie. These are a few responses given on Facebook:

Syazani Aqilah: "It is a nice movie. It teaches us to love and be loved."

Hakimah Athirah: "I love the movie. It is full of love and laughter."

Muhammad Hanan: "The movie was okay. It shows us that music is for everyone and it makes us feel better."

Ravi Sekaran: "It also made me feel better and the music was awesome."

Christina Jane: "The movie was awesome and it should be watched by students together in class. Thanks to Cikgu Zainal for showing us that even musical movies could be entertaining."

WATCHING "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" WITH 1KP1 STUDENTS

It was time to watch the all time favourite "The Sound of Music" again with the form one students. They had never watched this movie before, and I hoped that they had enjoy what they had seen and heard - the beautiful plot, the comedy, the songs and the music. I thought so, based on the response observed during the screening. I wonder whether the movie is going to be one of the significant films in their lives that they will remember watching at least once in a lifetime.

in our cineplex, you can always watch the movie by sitting on the floor

BRINGING BACK THE SOUND OF MUSIC INTO CLASS

Most of the time, we get too busy teaching according to the syllabus or to make sure students are able to get high marks for exam until we forget the fun element in teaching and learning. So when the PMR exam was going on and my students did not have to attend school, I intentionally asked the form one and two students to come to watch a classic movie: The Sound of Music. 2KP1 came on Friday and 1KP1 on Monday. Not even half of each of the class turned up but I was still quite happy with the response.

I closely observed their response while viewing this old movie. When Maria first appeared on the screen and delivered her first song, everybody was laughing, as I had been expecting. Of course, this movie is no High School Musical. However, as the story was progressing, their eyes were glued on the screen and in the end, they all had a very good time. I guess the English subtitles did a good job in assisting them to have a better understanding of the dialogues and they were all reading and laughing throughout the show.

I am already thinking of The King and I for the next video viewing session.
