SHOPPING HAVEN FOR TOURISTS - BOGYOKE AUNG SAN MARKET

14th DECEMBER 2019 ~ One of the main attractions in Yangon was Bogyoke Aung San Market - the shopping Mecca for tourists visiting the city. We went there twice - once in the morning to see what the market had to offer, the second time to shop in the afternoon.

The market building itself was a historic site of Yangon. It was built in 1926 and named as Scott Market but was then changed to Bogyoke Aung San Market when Myanmar achieved independence. It possesses colonial architecture and known for its cobblestone inner streets, the building is very well taken care of up until today, showing how serious the government is in preserving its heritage site.

Not many people, especially Malaysians, are keen to visit Myanmar compared to other South East Asian countries. After visiting Bogyoke Aung San Market, one would realize what he/she has been missing all this while. I was personally surprised with the unique and distinct items that could be found in the market.

Among the interesting and exotic items that you could buy as souvenirs would be Myanmar's well-known jades, rubies and other gem stones. Hence, there was a wide varieties of ladies' fashion accessories like necklaces, bangles, earrings, rings and pendants - in all different glittering colours. The Myanmar traditional handicrafts and hand-woven linens were also something you could get. I should have bought the beautiful paintings from the art galleries but I would make sure I do that when I go back there in the future.

Thanaka powder had been commercially packaged and sold in Myanmar and found one of its grand outlets in the market. It is a kind of powder produced from Thanaka tree and applied onto both men and women's faces as it is believed to help get better skin complexion. It is used as a protection from UV rays and polluted air, as well as remover of pimples and excessive oil. People walking around with two big circles of thick powder on their faces is a common sight in Myanmar, and this is not something that you can find anywhere else in the world.

Bogyoke Aung San Market would be a dangerous place for women because I believe they would be spending the whole day (or may be more here). If you love shopping when traveling, try to opt out for Yangon and make sure you come this shopping haven in the city.
