30th MAY 2023 ~ On the second day of our stay in Brunei, we ventured out of Bandar Seri Begawan and headed to Seria, which was about 78 kilometres. We rented a car, Proton Pesona, and was charged BND75 for one day.
Seria is actually not a holiday destination. This is the place where oil was first struck in Brunei and has since renowned for the centre of Brunei's gas and oil industry.
The Billionth Barrel Monument was erected to commemorate the billionth barrel oil produced onshore in Brunei. The monument was officially unveiled by His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei on 18th July, 2023.
The main section of the monument was the six arches that were joined at the top and symbolized the flow of oil from beneath the ground to the surface. There was the emblem of the country at the peak of the arches.
All around the place, there were machines called donkey heads that were used to pump oil, something like that. And all these were all scattered in open areas.
You could actually see the offshore oil rig from the distance from here but a pair of binoculars could be the best option for a better view.
We managed to have a short chat with a group of Polytechnic students with their teacher who was doing her intern. She suggested a few places we could go in Seria and Kuala Belait.
make friends, not enemies |
The second section of the monument was the series of paintings done on copper panels, depicting the oil and gas industry in Brunei. I had taken the effort to take photos of almost all the paintings and you could see them in the second part of this post.
We were glad we had chosen to come here, not just the capital city.
