8TH SEPTEMBER 2022 ~ The Songket and Keringkam Gallery was actually located opposite the hotel we were staying, just across the field. We finally stepped into the building on the last day while walking back to the hotel from the morning walk.
Keringkan is Sarawak traditional embroidery craft which is similar to songket-making in the Peninsular. You could find all sorts of Sarawak songket and keringkam here in the gallery - both for display and purchase.
Gold threads were used in producing a keringkam and they were beautiful. One thing for sure, the keringkam products were quite costly because of the difficult process and the long hours for the embroider to complete his/her work.
The more intricate the design, the more expensive it would be.
There were neckties for men too.
Thanks to the person at the counter for sharing and imparting interesting and important information about Sarawak songket and Keringkam to us. She seemed to be busy at first but turned out to be very friendly when we approached her.
One place you should visit if you want to know more about the culture of Sarawak, particularly the Malays. And there was no entrance fee.
