15th DECEMBER 2019 ~ Sulamani Temple was another important place for worship in Bagan. The structure was unique but the building was still under preservation work when we were there, and the dome was fully covered with a green net.
Here are some interesting facts about the temple that might amaze you:
- The temple was built by King Narapatisithu when he found a small ruby on the site.
Sulamani means "a small ruby" or "a crowning jewel". - There are similarities in architecture between Sulamani Temple and Htilominlo Temple which was built a few decades after.
- The top of this temple perched a sikhara, a tower originated from North India.
- There were four porches for this temple and the building was symmetrical.
Originally the temple housed a number of associated buildings, like the library, a lecture hall and cells for the monks.
One of the most important features of the temple was the fine brickwork which was still evident up until today.
