16th SEPTEMBER 2020 ~ Selamat Hari Malaysia - Happy Malaysia Day! It was a public holiday and what better way to celebrate this historic day other than going on a gastronomic adventure and contributing to the nation's economy. Together with two colleagues of SDJ, we decided to visit this restaurant called Nasi Belanga 7 [TRANSLATE: 7 Rice Pots] and to try its signature 7 different coloured types of rice on one single plate.
We were the first customers to arrive and we were even there waiting at the entrance a few minutes before 11.00 a.m. The good thing was that we had the restaurant all to ourselves and could ask the restaurant's staff a lot of questions before choosing our food.
So here are the seven different varieties of rice you would get for your meal - Tomato Rice, Lemongrass Rice, Watermelon Rice, plain white rice, Nasi Lemak Pandan, Nasi Hujan Panas and Nasi Minyak. I don't think there is the English version for the last three kinds of rice.
MY VERDICT: My tongue could only differentiate the distinct tastes of a few different types of rice - they all tasted the same in the end. I chose to get the Ayam Lengkuas [TRANSLATE: Galangal Chicken] and it tasted was quite strong that it overpowered all the other existing flavours. However, the food was still delicious. I guess you would have to savour each type of rice with less or no gravy then only your tongue could detect its unique taste.
