29TH MAY 2023 ~ One of the iconic landmarks of Bandar Seri Begawan would be the majestic Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque which was situated in the heart of the city. I had been here once, a long time ago, and I could not remember much about this holy place. It must be old age.
Some interesting facts about the mosque, in note form:
- The mosque was named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, the father of there present King.
- The construction of the mosque was completed in 1958.
- The main influence of the design was of the Indian's Mughal architecture. Hence, there was a resemblance with Taj Mahal in India.
- The finest materials were used in the building: Shanghai granite, Italian marble, English stained glass and chandeliers, and Saudi Arabian fine carpets.
The most prominent feature of the mosque was the main dome which was covered with real gold leaves.
