THE UNIQUE ASH SALIIHEEN MOSQUE IN BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

30th MAY 2023     ~We decided to stop at another mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan to perform our prayers in the evening. The one in the itinerary list was Ash Saliiheen Mosque which had a unique and distinct architecture if compared to the other two mosques we had visited before.

I had to google for more information as I was impressed with the holy building's appearance, and I got the answer right away.

Unique among mosques in Brunei, the Ash Shaliheen Mosque was built in the Moroccan style. Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, considered the world’s foremost expert in Islamic architecture, conceived Ash Shaliheen Mosque as an oasis of spiritual meaning.

Many elements of the Mosque were physically imported from its place of inspiration, the North African area inhabited by the Arab-Berber culture. Brass lightings and a hand-cut “zellige” mosaic, all from Morocco, enhance the authentic Maghrebi feel of the mosque. Other elements recall the mosques of the Maghrib and Al-Andalus, from the Arab-inspired pottery to the open courtyard and its marble fountain.

The mosque interior is spacious enough for 1,000 worshipers at any given time. A transparent, retractable roof allows the Ash Shaliheen Mosque to enjoy copious light or cooling shade.

I, on the other hand, found the main prayer hall was quite small for a majestic mosque like this.

That should complete all the three major mosques that we had planned to visit during our stay in Brunei. You never know I will be visiting these mosques again some other time in the future.
