MY PONTIAN GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURE: KOPI TENGGEK

10th MARCH 2024    ~ Mr. Ridwan Wahid [a friend of UPM TESL Class of 1993] and his family were in town. Our mission this time was to embark on gastronomic adventures out of the Johor Bahtu district. He drove us to Kukup, Pontian, to get breakfast at this popular eating spot called Kopi Tenggek.

When we arrived, there was already a long queue forming at the counter. There was already a big crowd in the dining area. Nevertheless, the process of ordering was smooth and systematic so it was alright to be waiting in line for about 20 minutes.

There was someone who looked familiar in front of me but I dared not say "hi" just in case he was a doppelganger of someone whom I knew. When he turned around and called out: "Cikgu" [TRANSLATE: teacher], it was Mr. Izzat, an ex-student of SMK Taman Universiti. FOOTNOTE: fans are everywhere.

There were two sections for dining: the air-conditioned room and the open area.

We had Nasi Lemak, Fried Rice, Curry Puffs and Steamed Bread.

And I had to try the signature drink of this place from which the name was derived: Kopi Tenggek - brewed coffee with condensed milk.

The first mission was accomplished and we were ready for the next adventure, going to the most southern tip of Southeast Asia in Tanjung Piai.

BAD NEWS: We had actually arrived at the entrance of Tanjung Piai National Park. Nevertheless, it was closed when we arrived as the high tide was coming and the area would be flooded. The staff were tying the yellow tape across the bridge to prevent people from entering. So we had to divert somewhere else instead. Guess there would be a reason for Mr. Ridwan and family [and I] to return here one day.
