VISITING THE ORANG ULU TRADITIONAL HOUSE AT SARAWAK CULTURAL VILLAGE

6TH SEPTEMBER 2022  ~ Other than the main houses, there were also huts/smaller structures that worked like a workshop for demonstration activities. The first one we found was the parang making spot. [Parang is a sword-like tool that is used in daily activities like farming, hunting and even daily chores] Visitors could also buy ready made parang from here.

ORANG ULU HOUSE

The fourth house visited was Orang Ulu House. It was built on tall stilts so make sure you have strong feet to climb up the steep traditional stairs to get into the house. In fact, most of the houses in the Cultural Village had the same design so those who have problems with their feet would have difficulties going up and down and moving around the place.

The tall house reminded me of a short story I taught my form one students entitled "How Dalat Got Its Name".

There was also a welcome dance performance and the lady moved gracefully to the strum of the traditional musical string instrument called Sape. Do check the video at the end of this post.

The other hut nearby was the blowpipe making workshop. And it was actually a hut that belonged to the Penan people. From the host, we learned that the hut was not built permanently as the Penans would move away to other places to get food sources.

We had to continue walking to other houses before the cultural show started.
