THE CENTRAL MARKET IN PHNOM PENH

14TH AUGUST 2019 ~ The place tourists come to the Central Market to shop and to get souvenirs. The place is not only for foreigners to hunt for the best bargain, but also to admire the beautiful architecture of the building. By the way, do you know that in Khmer language is also called "phsar", which is similar to the Malay language "pasar".

Central Market is a large market constructed in 1937 in the shape of a dome with four arms branching out into vast hallways with countless stalls of goods. Initial designed by Jean Desbois (1891 Cherbourg -1971 Lorient). Construction works were supervised by French architect Louis Chauchon (1875 - 1945 Saigon) and the ingenue Wladimir Kandaouroff.

I was in awe the moment I stepped foot inside the market. The building was grand with a huge dome and it should be a place to be admired by many generations to come.

the entrances/exits: east, west, south and north

The most important thing when you are in the market is to remember which entrance you use to get into the building so you will not lose your way to get out.

There is a mini clock tower right in the centre of the market.

Outside one of the entrances/exits, there is also a wet market selling mostly fresh seafood from the river/lake. And some of them are still alive.

I went to the market twice. The first day was to have a look around and to see what could be the possible items to buy. I made a return trip on the final day to buy souvenirs before going home.

Definitely a place to visit, not only to shop but also to observe the architecture and its historical value.
